(CBS News) A gruesome mass grave found in southern England may be the final resting place of some of the most feared marauders of the 11th century.
Archeologists say the remains may belong to Viking mercenaries, who were buried in a burial pit in what now is the English town of Dorset. Isotope testing on the men's teeth links their origin to Scandinavia. That's where the easy clues end.

The Vikings did discover America (or Norsemen did, anyway), as long as you don't count the people who waiting to give them an unfriendly reception.
Archaeologists found a Viking-era building at L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland--definitely not built by Indians.

Well, maybe a little longer.
But have you have a big party on the beach, and decide to sleep over until morning, you’re going to be hanging around for at least 12 hours. That can get very unhealthy, especially if everyone is passed out and you don’t post sentries.
To: NCDragon
YES! You may. Kudos to you.
Thanks for the correction.

I don’t judge these marines for peeing on the enemy. I judge them for being stupid enough to photograph it. You’d think they would have learned after Abu Graib. My son is doing his 20 in SPecial Forces, and now is more likely to be in danger fighting some enraged, insulted Muslim.
To: blam
Maybe, but regardless, the other side had some choppers.

I agree with you, the one taking the picture was the stupid one. But they are all still just kids in many ways....You'd think they would know better...
All muslims are enranged and insulted just by having american's alive...if they didn't have us to fight, they'd kill each other...by our standards they are all insane...the only way to defeat them is to kill them and thats a hard thing for me to say....
To: SunkenCiv
This happened during the reign of Aethelred the Unready. They sure don’t make monarch’s names like they used to!

And they head put them to good use.

Quick viking raids could lead to permanent settlements: Dublin, York, Normandy...

"This type of event probably happened sever-al times during the Middle Ages." Those guys were pikers. Richard the Lionheart had 2,700 saracen prisoners executed at Acre in 1191, when Saladin failed to meet the terms of their negotiations.
