I was watching Paula Deen on the Food Network, whipping up a shrimp sauté to go over pasta. I thought to myself, "I could make a similar dish that would look much better (hers was murky from all the butter), taste much better (fresh, clean flavors from a small amount of extra-virgin olive oil, garlic, dry vermouth and herbs), with a fraction of the fat and calories."

Sure a more healthy diet makes a difference, but that is between Paula Dean and her doctor. The government nannies and liberal elites who think we are all too stupid to make the “right” decisions about our lives are just waiting for the chance to implement more control by dictating what we eat. What Paula Dean eats or does not eat is none of our business.

There was a British guy that was doing that very thing on his show. Raised his own hogs and a few beef, grew his own veggies and bartered for seafood and hunted other things. Ate well and raved about the “fat” on his pork and beef. Discusses eating well and healthy without being smarmy or preachy. I highly recommend the “River Cottage Series” http://www.rivercottage.net/
That, and the widespread use of remote tv channel changers :>), contributed to the widening of the population. (and a host of other related activities-or lack there of)

Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back.

Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams; compared to 5 grams for margarine.
Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.
Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods.
Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few and only because they are added!
Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavours of other foods.
Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years.
And now, for Margarine..
Very High in Trans fatty acids.
Triples risk of coronary heart disease ...
Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)
Increases the risk of cancers up to five times..
Lowers quality of breast milk
Decreases immune response.
Decreases insulin response.
And here’s the most disturbing fact... HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!

These facts alone were enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).
Open a tub of margarine and leave it open in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will notice a couple of things:
* no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something)
* it does not rot or smell differently because it has nonutritional value ; nothing will grow on it. Even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic . Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?
It’s not the butter, it’s the sugar and grains. Caveat: the butter needs to come from clean, healthy animals.
If she gives up all sugar and starchy carbs, especially wheat, max 1 fresh fruit serving a day, her diabetes would be gone in a short time. She can eat plenty of healthy fats.

Bingo! I have only ever lost weight on a low GI diet and I can keep it off with weight training. Of course I splurge every now and then, but that is what keeps me sane! I eat a diet high in protein and fat and my cholesterol numbers are perfect. I’ve had arthritis in my feet since I was 16 and I no longer suffer from any pain, even in the nasty weather we are experiencing now.
I wasn't laying out my entire diet, simply mentioning that, for me, cutting out the wheat flour and sugar caused me to drop weight effortlessly with a concurrenct drop in cholesterol. I still indulge in the occasional slice of pizza and I love meat pies -- with crust.
But they're intentional deviations, not staples.
Exactly. About 12 years ago I lost about 70 pounds. I did it by using my version of the old 1980s Weight Watchers Exchange program combined with the food pyramid at the time, measuring and portion control was key. I didnt see it as a diet, but a life style change. I ate whatever I wanted as long as it was within the exchange plan for the day. The hardest part for me was not eating too much but eating too little and of the right foods in the right portions. I used to never eat breakfast and sometimes skipped lunch but was gaining more and more weight over the years. I didnt cut out but greatly reduced carbs and put more emphasis on fresh vegetables and healthy whole grains and fresh fruits and leaner meats in moderation. And I put emphasis on whole foods and cut out most processed foods, lowered added salts and got more into healthy home cooking. And I planned my meals in advance and kept a food diary to keep me honest and on track.
But if I wanted to indulge in pizza or Chinese carryout or birthday cake or ice cream, fine, but I then had to offset the carbs and fats in what I ate the next day so that in any 48 hour period I was not out of balance. That way I never felt like I was depriving myself (or dieting) but understood there was a price to pay for indulging. After a time I found I learned what healthy portions looked like and didnt need to measure and weigh foods so much. I also found that after a time, sometimes I really didnt want the birthday cake but often did just because everyone else was eating it or when ordering Chinese carryout, steamed vegetables with brown rice was more satisfying and what I really craved more than Orange chicken and deep fried shrimp toast which made me feel sluggish and sickly the next day.
I also started walking at first 20 minutes and eventually an hour a day. Then I joined a gym and went at least 2 times a week a minimum of 20 -30 minutes of cardio and 20 minutes of moderate weight training. And I took up golf and walked the course whenever I could. If I couldnt work out or walk or play golf because of weather or work, I actually felt antsy.
Progress was slow at first but then the pounds melted away. My cholesterol had always been pretty good but my overall all level dropped to about 120 and my blood pressure was well within normal even a bit low for my age and no signs of diabetes that runs heavily in my family.
At 42 years old and 58 I weighed around 150 but I also had a lot of lean muscle and never looked or felt better; more energy, slept better, skin problems cleared up and I had better mental concentration. I felt and looked better than I had at 20.
At 50 now, Ive gained some weight back; a lower back injury and being out of work for a time set me back but Im getting back to more of my old routine.
I love good food and I love cooking and I love eating. I love all good things but in moderation and in balance.
If you don’t like Paula Deen...change the channel. Quit trying to police everyone’s lifestyle just because you don’t like it.
Heredity plays a role in your ability to manage cholestrol. Julia Child, who dearly Loved butter, lived to the ripe old age of 91. Linda McCartney, a devoted Vegan, died at the young age of 56 after a long battle with cancer. In the early days of man, he ate meat in the Winter because vegetables were scarce. In the Summer, he ate whatever grew around him.
My mom and I were big fans of Natalie Duprees show New Southern Cooking on PBS and I have that cook book. I might have to order Southern Memories myself.
Natalie represents the more gentile and traditional and classier example of Southern cuisine and life style much more like the Southerners I known and love. Paula Deens cooking style represents the trailer trash; how some people cook when they are not cooking Meth. : ),
The problem with Natalie Dupree is she had NO personality as a food presenter. Paula Deen became a star directly after 9/11 when the Food Network realized that people wanted homey, over-the-top American comfort food instead of shows devoted to wine and nouvelle cuisine. And with her engaging personality (not to my taste but to a lot of people), she became a superstar and a multimillionaire. Hats off to her! She started out as a single mother on food stamps!
I, personally, believe they are trying to get rid of her because of her enormous success. The media probably doesn’t even know that she’s pretty much a liberal Democrat.
I am not for policing everyones lifestyle. If you want to eat the crap Paula Deen pushes like bacon cheese burgers with sugar glazed donuts as the roll, go right ahead, please be my guest, knock yourself out, its your choice and your right and Im not going to stop you, nor do I think the government should stop you either.
But when you develop a heart condition and diabetes and weigh +300 pounds and cant walk and cant work and have to get a Hoverround chair just to get around that some people expect to be paid for by Medicare or Medicaid; dont expect me and other tax payers to pay for those monthly disability payments or push my health insurance costs up by having to pay for your expensive diabetes drugs like those that Paula Deen is now pushing, while you and she continue to eat that crap.
Personal choices come with personal responsibilities. If you are fine with paying for your life style choices on your own dime, thats fine with me.
You know - that’s the dirty little secret about all these skinny celebrities, etc.....they all smoke like fiends because it kills the appetite.
They’d rather be thin than have healthy lungs...oh well.

eat as natural as you can. an apple off the tree is best, then there is apple sauce, apple juice, frozen apple juice, last canned.
in that order. try to get the product as least processed as possible and eat that way.
I would never in a million years tell anyone what to eat - their business, their problem. I just don’t want to pay for their consequences, just like heroine addicts or gay bath house frequenters...
I can’t stand Dean because she lays on the “southern” schtick too much, is an endorsement whore and lastly but most important, is a HUGE lib dim...
