SARASOTA, Fla. (CBS TAMPA) A man fishing from his kayak a half-mile from Point of Rocks off Sarasota was shocked when a dog that was involved in a deadly DUI crash swam up to his boat terrified.
Once pulled to safety, Barney shrunk into a corner of the small craft, shaking and traumatized over the event. He sustained minor injuries, including one to his paw and several cuts.
The man brought Barney to a local vet, who used a tracking chip implanted in him to discover his owner was Donna L. Chen, who was struck by a Nissan Altima and died moments before.
Florida Highway Patrol said Blake Talman, 22, was fleeing from an earlier crash in his Nissan Altima northbound on SR-758 when he struck Chen and Barney.
The two were jogging north on SR-758 when Talman allegedly failed to navigate a left curve causing him to leave the roadway and strike a metal pole before hitting Chen and a street sign. Chen was knocked from the sidewalk into the center of the road, reports indicate.
Barney took off, though there is no mention of him in the report.
Talman struck several yellow wooden poles at the entrance to the St. Michaels Archangel Catholic Church then collided with the front right corner of a Ford Escort, veered left and hit another telephone pole.
Talman and a 24-year-old passenger were transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital where they were treated for serious injuries. Talman was released Sunday and transported to Sarasota County Jail where his bail was set at $100,000.
Talman faces charges including DUI manslaughter and DUI property damage and personal injury.

That will do the trick. If they had had that law at the time of the crash, maybe the drunk would have been driving 85 instead of 90. Very sorry about your acquaintance? friend? Dr. Chen.
Rehost Image is a Firefox add-on that makes it easy to post pictures not yet on the internet. Just download the photo you want to post from your camera to your desktop. Resize, edit, crop, etc. Then drag it into Firefox and right-click. Once the URL is on the clipboard, you just post <img src="[paste URL here]">.
By default Rehost Image uploads to ImageShack, but you can configure it to use a different service if you want.
This is so sad. Poor dog, poor owner.
Though I don’t think the dog was seeking help. He was scared beyond reason.
Why not? Video cameras have become really small, cheap, and ubiquitous, as has video storage. In one of the articles, O'Connor is quoted as saying he wanted a record in case he lands a big fish. Makes perfect sense. Video every trip and save it if something interesting happens.
My daughter didn’t think it looked like Siesta Key, too rocky.
Maybe he was south of Point of Rocks.
The drunk driver should be shot.
The cops said they did all they could legally do and that the two who didn't get arrested were walking toward the beach when they left. Here's what the local paper is reporting:
A deputy who saw them there 15 minutes after Blakey's arrest again approached them and advised them to move on, because a motorcycle group had rented the pavilion and the deputy believed the potential for trouble was high.
{so much for going to the beach like the cops reported as they are now at the SE corner of the parking lot}
"Both advised they were going out on the beach to sober up and then bond out their friend Blakey," Sgt. Scotty Osborne wrote in a statement about two hours after the 1:10 p.m. fatal crash Saturday that killed Donna Chen, a 53-year-old mother of three while she jogged on Midnight Pass Road.
Dear lord. They were going to the beach to "sober up" carrying a bottle of whiskey and then they were going to bond their friend out? How long does it take to "sober up" when your blood alcohol level is where it was with these two and you have a bottle of whiskey under your arm? How were they going to bond their friend out if they weren't going to get into a car? So many chances to stop the tragedy.....
At first I was sad but now I'm angry. Given the attitude towards this by the Sheriff's office and the County Commissioners, history will be allowed to repeat itself.
The dog was found 1/2 mile out in the gulf. They think he entered the water just north of Point of Rocks, but they don't know for sure. The fact that he was bleeding, and that far out, makes him one lucky pup that some bull shark didn't come along and turn him into lunch.
OMG, I never even considered sharks. And the fact that the dog was frightened and agitated made him even more of a target. firmly believe that animals can sense when a person, or another animal, is/are frightened and are vulnerable. Thank you so much for providing all the additional information on this very sad case.
How did you type the tags and the phrase for posting a picture here without adding extra spaces to keep it showing?

Here's how I do it. Yype the and symbol then #60; (no spaces) for the left facing one, The right uses #62 instead.
Alternately use the and symbol then lt; for the left and gt; for the right.
Example: <img src="URL Here">. You may have to avoid spell check when using these methods.

Thanks. I’ll try that next time.
This is a case where drunk driving and vehicular homicide should carry a death penalty.
You type the standard escape code in place of the character you want to show. The escape codes are known as HTML character entities click the link for a list. In the case of the less-than symbol that starts HTML markup elements, the entity is <. (Note that, in order to show that escape code properly, I needed to escape the ampersand using its entity, which is &.)
Firefox provides a simple way to view the markup used to create a given part of a page. Simply use the mouse to select the area of interest. Then right-click and select View Selection Source. That will show you the markup that was used, which for FR pages is pretty much all you need.
If you want to dig into more advanced cases, I recommend the Firebug extension. With Firebug installed, there will also be an Inspect Element selection in the right-click menu. It will show you the markup in the context of the overall structure of the page. Three separate but related computer languages are used to create modern pages: HTML, CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), and JavaScript. HTML structures the content of the page. CSS provides separate styling attributes to be applied to the various page elements. And JavaScript can be used to generate and rearrange the HTML and CSS and react to user actions and even changing conditions back at the server. Firebug lets you dig into all of that.
But FR disables CSS and JavaScript for posting, so just very basic HTML knowledge is all you really need.
Tournament bass fishing is the only sport I know of where the winners have to take lie detector tests.
