SARASOTA, Fla. (CBS TAMPA) A man fishing from his kayak a half-mile from Point of Rocks off Sarasota was shocked when a dog that was involved in a deadly DUI crash swam up to his boat terrified.
Once pulled to safety, Barney shrunk into a corner of the small craft, shaking and traumatized over the event. He sustained minor injuries, including one to his paw and several cuts.
The man brought Barney to a local vet, who used a tracking chip implanted in him to discover his owner was Donna L. Chen, who was struck by a Nissan Altima and died moments before.
Florida Highway Patrol said Blake Talman, 22, was fleeing from an earlier crash in his Nissan Altima northbound on SR-758 when he struck Chen and Barney.
The two were jogging north on SR-758 when Talman allegedly failed to navigate a left curve causing him to leave the roadway and strike a metal pole before hitting Chen and a street sign. Chen was knocked from the sidewalk into the center of the road, reports indicate.
Barney took off, though there is no mention of him in the report.
Talman struck several yellow wooden poles at the entrance to the St. Michaels Archangel Catholic Church then collided with the front right corner of a Ford Escort, veered left and hit another telephone pole.
Talman and a 24-year-old passenger were transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital where they were treated for serious injuries. Talman was released Sunday and transported to Sarasota County Jail where his bail was set at $100,000.
Talman faces charges including DUI manslaughter and DUI property damage and personal injury.
poor doggie :(

Ping
But their kayaks had very wide center sections because of the big brass cajones needed to hunt a whale with a little boat.
Bless this guy for helping poor traumatized Barney. I can’t even imagine how frightened he must have been. Vizslas are exttremely intelligent and beautiful dogs. (I had 2 of them as a kid)
Very tragic about his owner being killed in what should have been a pleasant outing for her and Barney. So very very sad.
This article tells a little more.

I wonder how long the poor dog was in the water?

Here is another article with a photo of the victim’s sister with Barney—what a beautiful sweet faced dog.
Can someone post the photo? I forgot how to do it.
“You tell me. Ancient Inuit used to hunt whales in kayaks.”
Are you saying that the ancient Inuits were “bad guys” for hunting whales in kayaks?
Three yahoos were drinking heavily at the beach pavilion Saturday afternoon and started harassing some of the families enjoying lunch at the beach. It got so bad that pavilion employees had to call the Sheriff. Two LEO's came to the pavilion and told these scum, who were blatantly drunk and disorderly, to move along or get arrested. Two of them stumbled away to the beach. The other started shouting obscenities at the cops and got arrested. His friends asked the cops when they could bail him out. They replied that it would take a couple of hours. At that point they walked to the parking lot, keys visibly in hand, got in their car and drove 90 mph (in a 40 mph zone) through a residential area. The driver was unable to negotiate a turn and hit a tree. The car caromed off the tree and hit Dr. Chen, who was walking her dog. She died instantly. She leaves behind three children.
I wrote our County Commissioners asking them to explain why the police would allow a group of flagrantly drunk yahoos, who were harassing innocent families, to go back to the beach where they could continue harassing people, while getting even drunker, instead of being arrested. Had they arrested them, for breaking the law, Donna Chen would still be alive. Shockingly, the commissioners do not see a problem with these fellows being allowed to continue their drunken abuse of other beach-goers and none of them realize that by condoning this kind of behavior, you will only get more of it. Drinking alcohol on the this particular beach is permitted and the weekends are filled with drunken behavior that makes it a challenge for families to enjoy the beach. There is rarely a police presence so the drunks rule with impunity.
One idiot commissioner said she's going to make sure the speed limit gets lowered from 40 mph to 35 mph. This is the kind of intelligence we're dealing with here. It's sad and tragic. If the Sheriff's deputies had enforce the law, and arrested the drunks for harassing people at the pavilion, this woman would still be with her family.
What a tragic and unnecessary tale. I hope the men get their heads handed to them, and I hope the Commissioners prohibit alcohol on the beach. I don’t know what else can be done. Three motherless children and a guardian-less pup because of this idiocy.
My heart is breaking reading this. Something told me she had to be a great person. (She had good taste in dogs for one thing)
Please let her family know that many people are thinking of them and I am very sorry that you lost a friend and good member of your community.
Her family must be devastated.
Also could you PLEASE give Barney a hug for me?
The drunk driver needs to ROT IN HELL. i am so very upset about this story—i wish there was something I could do.
Barney and friend...
To post a picture: Right click on the photo and find the line that says Properties. Highlight the line and click Cntrl and C together. Go to the posting box and type < img src, except leave the space out between the < and the img. Then, without any spaces, type " and press Cntrl and V together. This should paste the Properties phrase into the posting box. Close with another " and a > -- all without spaces. The only space in that whole phrase will be between the img and the src. Then click preview. If you've done it right you should see your picture. If not, you'll get a red X, or you'll get nothing.
Practice and you'll find that it is really easy and fun. Good luck.
Remember, your picture that you want to post must already be on the Web somewhere with a web address (properties) for this to work. You cannot do this with a photo right out of your camera.
It’s a little portable helmet cam thing. He said he uses it to video tape his catches, in case he gets a marlin or something. Yeah, pretty lame. How many times can you watch yourself in a kayak.
Thank you! I didn’t have my “cheat sheet” handy.
Look at that beautiful dogs face—what a sweetheart.
Another doggie ping. Joe doesn’t seem to be answering this evening.
Ping?
Not a kitty story, but I still think it is ping worthy for ANY animal lover—read the story and comments and watch the video.
Look up the Carrolton Bus Crash sometime. It is the worst drunk-driving accident in US history and the guy responsible served less than twelve years. Twenty-seven were killed and thirty-four were injured, mostly teenagers (including the older sister of a classmate and friend).
