Was the Gators' use of 'cracker' actually reverse racism?
(South Florida) Sun Sentinel ^ | January 5, 2012 | (South Florida) Sun Sentinel Editorial Board

Call University of Florida football players a bunch of classless trash talkers if you want. Call them dirty if you want. But racist? For using the term "cracker"? That seems a stretch.

Not sure I can call you boogieman in some contexts these days.

Not from a white POV but when viewed from the black aspect it is quite a different story. I taught in inner city high schools for sixteen years before moving to the edge of severe burnout and taking time off now in a wonderful sweet middle school before I ease back into a high school environment.

The blacks called me a "cracker" everytime I asserted my authority in keeping the peace in my classes. Mostly the thugs who thought they ruled both the streets and the corridors of the school. They may have some sway on the street (they've not yet challenged me for my piece of cement) but in my classroom I am KING. It's not a democracy, it's a dictatorship and I am the dictator!

So whenever I had security remove some foaming at the mouth hairball, he'd be screaming at me and calling me cracker.

ONE such time I stopped everything by screaming "WAIT A MINUTE!" I was so loud everybody stopped and stared. Security, the struggling punk, the cheering class, everybody froze and looked at me. I continued:

"I have been hearing this for years and I just have to know: Are we talking RITZ or SALTINES here? 'Cause I really don't like Ritz so much but I really do like Saltines." The kids then started to giggle. One girl spoke up and said: (respectfully) "Sir, it refers to WHIP CRACKER as in the Masssa on the Plantation."

I paused and looked at the class and said: "Okay I can understand how from your point of view that term represents the lowest vilest form of insult. But look at it from the other end. The Massa, that whip cracker, he was still the BOSS, right? So, yeah the era was not a good one for things like human dignity, but consider that such an insult only really stings as an insult if the person it's being attached to agrees. And this whip cracker, he was a boss and IN CHARGE, not the reverse. So before you guys go hurling such epithets around consider whether or not they're actually going to feel the condemnation you mean to attach."

Then I had the punk taken out by security but he was quiet. I think everybody learned something that day. Teachable moment.

"Sir, it refers to WHIP CRACKER as in the Masssa on the Plantation."

That's actually NOT what it refers to.

As someone pointed out earlier, it refers to early coachman in Georgia that drove the team of horses pulling the coach by cracking a whip.

If this had anything to do with slavery, do you think there would have been a negro league baseball team called the Atlanta Crackers?????

I was at the game, I can’t stand florida love the buckeyes but this guy needs to shut his mouth. Take the loss like a man punk kid and furthermore take your frustration out on Rainey or someone instead of whining to a reporter.

Don’t worry DFW Meyer will have this thing turned around while gator fan is crying about Urbans recruits in 2014. The problem was Muschamp and Fat Charlie. That and FLA better stop being so ethical about over-signing if they want to keep up with Saban and Miles.

Yeah, well we’ll see how Meyer responds the first few times Michigan beats him down.

I think Meyer couldn’t handle the fact that Bama had surpassed Florida, and that’s why he was looking to get out of UF, once Tebow was gone.

"Is the word “reverse” really needed in the headline?"

No. It is not.

In fact, the inclusion of it is quite insulting, as it implies that "racism" is a uniquely "white" flaw. This transcends merely being insulting, because, in truth, Blacks, Hispanics and Orientals are unquestionably more uniformly and endemically racist than are most white Americans.

I lived in Hawai'i in my 20's, and found that the Chinese hated the Japanese and Koreans, the Koreans hated the Vietnamese and Chinese, etc. In fact, Mandarin Chinese are prejudiced against Xiang and Cantonese, etc. Native Hawai'ians hate everyone who is not a Hawai'ian by birth. Haoles (Whites), Pappollos (Blacks), the Mokes have derogatory nicknames and a disparaging attitude for everyone not blessed to have been born into their Paradise, including other South Sea natives like Samoans and Phillipinos.

Bigotry and prejudice is a far more prolific way of life for every race other than Caucasian, and to imply or assume that White Racism is unique or even on a par with the venom embraced by these multi-hued rainbow dirtbags is both insulting and factually inaccurate.

LMAO!!!

I'm just relating what I was told and have confirmed by both the African American kids in the inner city AND their teachers. Which is very interesting because you'd expect them to be experts on their own slice of American history. I'm a Government guy. That, plus economics and psychology. Next year I might pick up something to do with criminal justice and law enforcement if I get to go over to the magnet school that's trying to recruit me.

Urban Meyer is a Buckeye and has always wanted the Ohio State job. My son-in-law played for him at Bowling Green - his first head coaching job. He took a team that was lousy, ran off 20 scholarship players and made them a top 25 team. He then went and did the same thing at Utah.

I was at one of his first spring practices at Florida. The Gators were soft as a pillow and he molded them into a great team and won two national championships with them. I have been a football coach for a long time so I know softness when I see it.

One last thing - Here is a list of Meyer’s coaches from that Bowling Green team: Tim Beckman - Illinois new head coach; Dan Mullen - hc at Miss St. and front runner for Penn State job; Greg Studrawa - offensive co-ord. at LSU; DJ Durkin - LB coach at Florida; Mick McCall - OC at Northwestern; Billy Gonzales - WR coach at LSU; Zack Azzani - OC at Western Kentucky; Matt Campbell - Toledo’s new head coach. And these are only the ones that I remember off the top of my head.

Unless Michigan wins the recruiting war for Ohio high school players (which I doubt is going to happen - I don’t any beat downs coming in the near future. Meyer’s dad who just died was a huge OSU fan and Woody Hayes fan. They have a picture of Woody hanging in their house. The Buckeyes will play for the national championship before Braxton Miller graduates. What Urban Meyer has accomplished as a head coach is not done by accident or because Ron Zook is a great recruiter.

Native Hawai'ians hate everyone who is not a Hawai'ian by birth.

I found that many on the islands....were much more interested in skin color. Didn't matter if you were Mexican, American Indian, Japanese, whatever....just as long as you were darker skinned. You were in.

I had relatives live on Maui...for many, many years. They said, they would NEVER totally fit in.

Oh, they had friends that were "native" brown folks...but when push came to shove...they knew they could not count on those "friends". Period.

That said....there are racists everywhere. And they just aren't white. Not by any normal thinking.

I'm part American Indian....and some of the most racist folks I've seen are American Indian. It's sad..........

Yea, that's generally true, though the more Hawaiian blood they can claim moves them up the tribal grievance ladder.

But the real unifying thread is hostility to white people. It's all a result of Captain Cook. If that cracka had not been such a fine navigator, Hawaii would be a real paradise. Everyone would have their own coconut tree and a shiny new Bertram with a flat screen tv.

Maybe the next time someone tells you it has to do with slavery, ask them why for decades there was a negro league baseball team in Atlanta called the Crackers.

There is no way—no way—a negro league team would have called themselves the Crackers if it was about slavery.

A crqcker is a white north Floridian who makes his living off the land and woods where he harvests pine sap to be cracked, ie turned into turpentine.

Sort of like a tarheel except further south

Michigan this year was a few errant passes from getting beat by the worst OSU team in recent memory, AT HOME. Terrelle Pryor would have put up 60+ on that team.
