Natalya Murakhver, a New York food writer and mother of an 18-month year old daughter, loved her premium brand orange juice -- the "100 percent pure" and "not from concentrate" kind that comes in the colorful carton and tastes consistently delicious.
That is, until she said she learned from her first-time moms group that there's a "secret ingredient" in all premium orange juices that companies are not required to put on their labeling.
Now, after writing Whole Foods, she refuses to buy her favorite, "365" juice, amid uncertainty about its contents.
"One of the moms said she had read about [how the juice is made] and they held it in tanks for up to a year and it pretty much lost all of its flavor and had to be reinvigorated with these flavor packs, which are essentially chemicals," said Murakhver, 40, and co-author of "They Eat What?: A Cultural Encyclopedia of Weird and Exotic Food from around the World."
For the last 30 years, the citrus industry has used flavor packs to process what the Food and Drug Administration identifies as "pasteurized" orange juice. That includes top brands such as Tropicana, Minute Maid, Simply Orange and Florida Natural, among others.
Murakhver said the addition of the flavor packs long after orange juice is stored actually makes those premium juices more like a concentrate, and consumers need to know that.

This article sounds like a lot of bunk to me.
That said, I do not like orange juice. I saw a show once on how it’s made—the whole orange is crushed, so it contains not just the juice of the fruit, but also of the peel. Yuck. If I squeeze my own juice, I certainly don’t put peel juice in it!
If you don’t like to see/know how OJ is pressed...I strongly suggest you never see/know how apple cider is pressed. LOL
I am going to need to know how trimming the Mulberry tree killed the orange tree.
Or did the guy trim the wrong tree? And if that was the case, the guy must have been blind. Citrus trees are so distinctive.
That honey sounds rather disgusting. What do they do, just grab the honeycombs out of the hive and run them through a blender?
No thanks. I’ll take my honey pure, without insect parts and hive components in it. I also know that honey freshly harvested from the hive is clear, not opaque like in the pictures at that website. My stepfather’s business partner kept bees; I had plenty of fresh honey as a child.
Keeping pollen in the honey sounds like a great way to induce allergic reactions. Although, anyone with plant allergies should read the label to see what kind of flowers went into the honey. I had a scare not long ago, when I ate some honey and my mouth became itchy (allergic reaction). Luckily, the reaction did not develop beyond an itch.
Lucky for me, I’m not a fan of apple juice, either. It’s a mystery to me how the juice of a fruit can manage to taste so completely unlike the fruit.
Ask an athletic coach which food he would ask his athletes to avoid. Most would say orange juice.
I have a feeling you haven't a clue as to what you are talking about.
TTFN...have a wonderful Christmas.

Please educate me...what flowers go *into* honey?
My grandmother use to take her honey comb and all. Just bite off a piece. That was back in the 40-50s when she lived with us part time...You could buy honey comb by the piece in the grocery store...She was born in the 1800’s...lived to be 90 and could gum a piece of steak without teeth...Never saw her wear her dentures...we lived a simple life....:O)
that stuff can kill you at least 7 different ways...
But if you can that tomatoe its good for a year or more...depends on the process..some whiskeys are 8 years old, cost more, been sitting in burnt barrels hidden in a cave..
Lets face it O J kills, usually with a knife...
We get our honey from a local. Usually Buckwheat.
The only reason it was “confirmed” that Black bears were moving back into the Ozarks was when he shot and killed one when it was getting into his hives.
Numerous sightings were always ignored until then and the rangers always told people they were crazy. Same with the mountain lions. Bunch of idiots.
I have made great orange cookies that call for grated orange peel, usually called zest on the cooking shows...same for great lemon cookies..
As a matter of fact, distilled water and purified air are chemicals.
This bodes well for the family farm in the valley. I’ll be bringing some great oranges back with me this Christmas.
;o)
You got that right. Ain't no bear around here----until they get mauled by one....

I’m wondering what she meant; taken literally, she is saying certain types of flowers are in the honey.
This is what puzzles me.
I only buy local honey now. The first time I bought it, I was shocked at the difference (for the better). I’ll never buy honey at the grocery store again. Luckily, we have several apiaries in our area.
