Will this be the first time the world sees the Ark of Covenant?

A very British problem of a leaky church roof could be about to give the world the chance to glimpse the legendary Ark of the Covenant.

That's because the claimed home of the iconic relic - a small chapel in Ethiopia - has sprung a leak and so the Ark could now be on the move.

The Ark - which The Bible says holds God's Ten Commandments given to Moses on Mount Sinai - is said to have been kept in Aksum, in the Chapel of the Tablet, adjacent to St Mary of Zion Church, since the 1960s. According to the Old Testament, it was first kept in the Temple

Since then it's been the goal of many adventurers and archaeologists to find it. Most-famously, but also fictitiously, Indiana Jones was shown in the 1981 Steven Spielberg film Raiders of the Lost Ark.

There has also been a long-running claim from the Orthodox Christians of Ethiopia that they have had the Ark for centuries, and since the 1960s it has apparently been kept in the chapel.

This small and curiously-styled building is surrounded by spiked iron railings, and situated between two churches, the old and new, of St Mary of Zion in central Aksum.

No one has been allowed to see the holy object, described in scripture as being made from acacia wood, plated with gold and topped with two golden angels, except one solitary elderly monk, who must watch over the Ark for the remainder of his life, and is never allowed to leave the chapel grounds.

But now the chapel - which was designed by the Ethiopian leader Emperor Hailie Selassie - has had to be covered in a tarpaulin to stop rain getting in.

I fully expect someone to bring it into the shop one night on “Pawn Stars.”

RICK: “Yeah, well, before I can make an offer on this, I’ll have to bring someone in to authenticate it. Chumley.....get the Pope on the phone!”

RE: Was it invisible when it was Israel?

It WAS visible. The only thing is you CANNOT touch it, or you die. A man named Uzzah died when he touched the ark.

According to the Bible,

2 Samuel 6:6, 7 - “And when they came to Nachon’s threshing floor, Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled. Then the anger of the Lord was aroused against Uzzah, and God struck him there for his error; and he died there by the ark of God.” [NKJV]

In the Old Testament, the Philistines actually captured the Ark and placed it beside the statue of their giod, DAGON, as a trophy for their people to see.

The statue of their god DAGON was toppled miraculously the next day.

I was poking fun at the headline. I know full well the ark was visible, at least until the Bible inconveniently stopped mentioning it. And that’s where all the legends of the Queen of Sheba and the Jewish exiles fleeing up the Nile and Prestor John start.

It might be an interesting "relic", but the Ark of the Covenant is now simply one of the "figure(s) for the time then present" (Hebrews 9:9). It was symbolic, representive to the Truth.
But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. (Hebrews 9:11,12)

This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. (Hebrews 10:16,17)

Jesus is our Ark, Christ in us.

As a matter of fact, there is fairly good reason to think that the Ark of the Covenant MAY be in that little church. There was quite a persuasive article in First Things a number of years ago, which I can’t seem to locate at the moment. If true, then it was removed from the Temple at an early date, well before the Crusades, and moved south to an island in the upper Nile and then to Ethiopia.

Curiously, the Ark as a symbol still plays a significant role in the Ethiopean version of Christianity.

If so, then I’m not sure that it’s terribly smart to mock it, given the fates of those who did in ancient times.

Same with cancer cure discoveries and global warming “findings.” The priesthood of “science” is just like the priesthood they wish to replace. Atheists and debunkers need to know this about their nasty science selves. :)

But if it held the real ark, wouldn’t anyone trying to storm the gates fail?

Thanks SeekAndFind. Sounds like Selassie was a lousy architect. ;') The purported Ark has a weird smell to it, like wet mistletoe. Don't ask me how I know that, if I told ya, I'd have to, well, I'm not doin' it.

To all -- please ping me to other topics which are appropriate for the GGG list.

A bit of this followed up with more of the same or just move the ark back to the former building it was in?

I don’t know what people are going to see, but it won’t be the Ark of the Covenant. That’s with God, and He isn’t here yet.

“Why don’t they just fix the leak in the roof?”

When it’s raining they can’t, and when it ain’t raining, it don’t leak.
