That’s all very interesting and probably true. How does it relate to the 2012 “Apocalypse” and Mayan “extinction?” Are you saying the collapse of the city-states was due to hemorrhagic fever? If so it was only the coup de grace after years of inter-kingdom warfare and drought. The Mayan people did not go extinct.
I've been here all along. Your suggestion that the Mayan city-states have been supplanted by modern drug gangs is interesting but off-point. The OP suggested the Mayans are extinct; they are not. There will be no 2012 "Apocalypse" nor did the Mayans predict one.
When in human history have common folks been lucky enough to avoid exploitation by the brutal and powerful? History is nothing if not repetitive.

There was a Mayan free State recognized by the UK on the Yucatan Peninsula from the 19th to around the beginning of the 20th century.
There are still who speak Mayan,dress Mayan and live in their own belief systems.They are hardly extinct.
Given what is going on in 2010-2011,if 2012 is more of the State it won’t matter much what the intent(most likely non-apocalyptic) had to do with a stone calendar.
