Check out this website: http://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/sbdb.cgi?sstr=2005%20YU55;orb=1;cov=0;log=0;cad=0#orb
you need JAVA installed to view the app
COMET YU55 It is going to cross our orbital path and almost be directly in the same line and path as Earth, right along our orbital plane and orbital location around the Sun right around November 9
People used to freak about that comet Elenin, it misses us by quite a bit, but, YU55 is very close!
Many conspiracy theorists are saying the government is covering this up, that it is the end of the world, Obama knows, that Fema camps are NOT for the NOW but for THIS COMET and a collision with Earth and coffins are being distributed
Here is one of those alarmist videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udmcQq02X0E
There is a language alert for the video
I like watching these for I do NOT believe it is the end of the world, but I am a space buff, it is cool, but to see the JPL site and seeing that YU55 DOES come REAAAALLL Close to us, that is going to be a spectacular light show for a comet, one that you will be able to see with the naked eye and maybe photograph with a camera in the day time, too

Highly unlikely. On the other had about the asteroid, I want to see the update on Nov 7th.

Whoever wrote this article is an absolute IDIOT...concerned more about conspiracy and the end of the world than they are about facts.
Exhibit 1: They don't know the difference between a comet and an asteroid.
Exhibit 2: An object the size of YU55 would not end the world...not even close. Local devastation...yes...global...no.
Exhibit 3: EMS tests a lot.
Exhibit 4: YU55 will not hit the Earth...it is not a threat to Earth...just as Elenin was not a threat to Earth...although numerous idiots would not listen to me try to tell them that either.
So...while it is possible the government is using the threat of an impact to run an exercise...that is not than unusual...and frankly...I am glad the government understands the risks. Too bad the author of the article has their tin foil hat on so tight it has stopped all blood flow to their brain.
Time will PROVE this to be the case.

I’ve always thought a “test” would be more effective if it was a surprise.
The “emergency system” worked pretty good on 911.
Will internet be shut down, too?
It very well could be that once everything is shut down, it won’t come back up. Or it could simply be a test. Bottom line: there’s nothing we can do about it without an opposition party.

I don’t know if the cable providers are required to participate.

BTW, have you tried the extra large Jamoca shake from Arby’s and put it in the fridge freezer to harden before eating it? Great stuff!

400 meters cubed is 6.4x10^7 cubic meters of stuff. If we assume an average density similar to ice, then that will be around 6.4x10^10 kg. If it impacts at earth's escape velocity (11,200 m/s) it will release 6.4x10^10 * (11200 ^ 2) = 8x10^18 joules of energy = about 2000 megatons.
Above is all seat-of-the-pants guestimates.

I didn’t read the entire article because 1) there has already been some fruit-cakery posted here and elsewhere about this and 2) when someone doesn’t know the difference between a comet and an asteroid...when...frankly...they aren’t worth my time. I figure if they can’t keep the simple facts straight...I don’t care if they are making fun of it or not...they’re none too bright.

I thought asteroids all looked like Idaho potatoes. Why is this one so symmetrical?
