After 128 days, 7 Beta releases, and 1 gold master, its finally arrived. iOS 5 has just been released to everyone (or at least, everyone with a compatible iOS device).
For those who hadnt finagled their way into the developer Betas: 1) youre a more patient human than I could ever hope to be, and 2) youre in for a treat. This is the biggest update iOS has seen since the addition of the App Store, and its jam-packed full of good stuff.
The iOS 5 update is compatible with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 (GSM and CDMA), iPod touch 3rd/4th generation, and the iPad/iPad 2. Itll also come preloaded on the 4S, of course, when that device launches later this week.
Its been a while since iOS 5 was announced to the world, so heres a quick recap of some of the biggest features:
iCloud: Apples cloud-based content/data syncing service. Backs up your content, photos, etc. in the cloud for safe keeping, provides one-click access to redownloading all the apps youve ever purchased, etc.
iMessage: Apples free iOS-to-iOS messaging solution. SMS dies today. Notification Center: Apple has completely overhauled their old, antiquated alerts system. You now drag down from the top of the screen to see a drawer with all notifications.
Newstand: Bundles all of your e-magazine/newspaper subscriptions into one smart folder
Reminders: a new to-do/reminder system, complete with location-based alerts
Twitter Integration
Much improved Camera UX (You can access the camera with a double tap of the home button on the homescreen, and use the volume up key to take a photo)
Crazy simple photo editing (Cropping, rotating, red-eye reduction) within the Photo app
Over-the-air updates and PC-less device activation
Downloading the update is pretty simple: just plug in, pop into iTunes, tap on your devices name in the left-hand navigation, and click the Update button found on the page that pops up. If youre not seeing the update, give it a few minutes the servers are getting hammered pretty hard right now.
My guess? They’ll have to write a patch to optimize for Verizon.
No iOS5 for me today...
:-(
There are a few good, “Create your own ringtone,” apps out there.
I use, “DIY Ringtone,” and it works pretty good.
Similar results here, for Lion.2. Next week will presumably be just as good.
Hmmm. This is getting weird. I had no problem with Lion 10.7.2 — at least the download. But now Safari’s acting all buggy (short delays, error messages on refresh which go away, and then the refresh happens. WTH?)
I’ll agree with another poster who said this wasn’t Apple’s best effort. They should have waited and got it right.
FYI, just visited the message boards on Apple’s site. One user called Apple Care, and was informed that the servers are indeed overloaded. Their advice? Keep trying or wait ‘till later.
Go to myxer.com, click on “ringtones” then go to “tools”, make your own. You upload a music or text file from your computer and it allows you to drag through the song for the area you want to make a ringtone. I use it, my daughters use it, it’s great!
Your lucky the update turned my totally stock, unhacked, not messed with, iPhone 4g into a BRICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you want on or off the Mac Ping List, Freepmail me.
Safari has TABS! WooooHoooo! What a relief!
Apples server are getting hammered. The error, which seems to happen while in the backup phase, does not represent a problem with backup, but rather it can’t connect to get verification of the update. Keep trying.
Make sure you’ve done a full complete transfer purchases/backup/sync -FIRST!
I wish apple did a better job with error dialogs.
I still have to go back and restore all my apps now. Music and photos, as well as other data transferred, but not my old apps.
They took away my 1st gen iPad gestures I’ve been running with all summer. Grrrr!
Not using iCloud, but I like that it does a wireless WI-Fi sync now.
Haven’t touched my 3GS phone. I’ll wait till I get the pad sorted out.
i can make my ringtones right from itunes, it’s pretty simple to do. it’s the text/ email/ notification sounds that i haven’t figured out.
Best roundup I have read so far of all that is iOS 5.

Yes.
wo0ho0!! thanks!
i’ll be dl/ing iOS 5 tonight :)
I had the same happen...I just restarted the phone...restarted my PC (after installing the latest iTunes of course) and tried it again and it upgraded fine. Using it now now and lots of nice changes...
The texting between the iPhone and iPad is amazing, I just hope it’s free, lol!
If the message bubble and send buttons are blue it's free...if green you pay your carrier...:oP
