Of all the U.S. cities that claim a connection to the troubled author Edgar Allan Poe, Baltimore likes to think its case is strongest.
Poe's family is from Baltimore, his literary career began in the city, he died a mysterious death at a Baltimore hospital and his body was buried here in 1849.
But the city may soon lose a key physical connection to Poe. The Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum, where the writer lived for four years in the early 1800s, is in danger of closing next year, due to budget cutbacks by the city.
"Everyone is tightening their belt," said Jeff Jerome, the museum's curator and only employee, who also works for the city's planning department

Sherlock Holmes was clearly inspired by C. August Dupin. (Who was in 3 stories)
“I visited there one time the scariest place I have ever been.”
I went there once with a gf about 20 years ago. Didn’t get out of the car.
I know that Dupin was the first detective and I can recall, “Murders in the Rue Morgue” and “The Purloined Letter”, but can’t remember the third.
Of course beside that, Conan-Doyle credits his old professor, Dr. Joseph Bell as the inspiration for Holmes.
Kinda hard to get visitors and donations when it’s located in deepest, darkest Baltimordor.
And Poe was inspired by E.T.A. Hoffman’s short novel ‘Das Fräulein von Scuderi’.
He was also a solid Conservative, as note his comments on the British Utilitarians: Poe On Utilitarianism.
William Flax
>>He invented modern detective fiction but it was short stories. He was also a pioneer of what came to be called Science Fiction.<<
The biggest literary contribution was having the climax at the end of the story. Prior to Poe it just kept going and going and going until the author ran out of words.
I lived in Balto in the 80’s and wouldn’t dare go to the Poe museum. If it was bad back then, I can’t imagine the neighborhood has improved that much in 30 years. There was also a Babe Ruth museum that I regret not seeing when I lived there, though. Did see Ft. McHenry.
The inner harbor and Camden Yards areas are nice. The rest?
Take off and nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
Ah yes Memorial Stadium. It’s true that the neighborhoods around it weren’t that bad, but getting there was. Lovely Greenmount ave. That is the only time I’ve seen a fast food restaurant (KFC) with the counter behind bulletproof glass.
