Irene Cruz says store's assistant manager dismissed bug parts, refused to file complaint, and declined to let Cruz speak with her superiors
A Miami mother of six says her family lost its appetite this morning when her daughter discovered her McDonald's pancakes were full of insect parts -- and a store manager refused to file a formal complaint.
Upon inspecting the rest of her children's food, Irene Cruz says, she found insect parts on nearly every plate.
But Cruz says when she returned to the Bird Road West McDonald's at 14699 SW 42nd Street, an assistant manager dismissed what appear to be bug bodies as oil particles or lamp residue that had fallen into the food.
"'It's really nothing'," Cruz said assistant manager Ofelia Guerra told her before eventually -- and angrily -- refunding the family's money, according to Cruz.
Cruz, who took pictures of the bug-ridden food, says the incident began when she and her husband drove away from the restaurant and the children began eating their food in the car.
Their nine-year-old daughter first noticed the problem when she held up a fork full of pancakes and screamed, "There's a piece of cockroach in my food!"
"There were tentacles, body parts, wings," Cruz said, "My daughter is completely traumatized thinking she might have eaten parts of it."
After gathering up all the food, the Cruzes returned to the restaurant, where, they say, Guerra not only denied the bugs but also refused to file a complaint and refused to put the family in touch with her superiors.
Guerra did offer the family fresh plates of food, Cruz said, but no one was interested.
"This place needs to be inspected," she said. "Something has got to be done."
When attempting to reach Guerra for comment, NBCMIami was told she had gone for the day and the store's manager would be available on Sunday.
According to the Division of Hotels and Restaurants' online records, the Bird Road West McDonald's was not citied for insect avtivity in its last five health inspections dating back to October 2009.
People who turn down free protein shouldn’t complain.
It’s possible the restaurant needs an inspection.
I am also reminded of the Victor Victoria salad scene.
Back in the day I used to work for a fast food place. I had just started and the old manager was fired, the place was crawling with cockroaches. The new manager cleaned it up quick, but I remember customers bringing back sodas with a cockroach in them.
Hmmm...I think it’s about time for McDonald’s to inspect their franchises again. This is a problem with chain restaurants and it requires a lot of oversight.
I’d also check the local food inspector to see if he is being paid off, if he is the owner’s significant other, or if there is any other reason that he didn’t catch this.
Remember a few years ago a woman planted a thumb in chili she got from Wendy’s???? And she was going to sue but then her scheme fell apart and the scam attempt was discovered.
Just saying, this woman took the food from McDonald’s home, then came back claiming it was full of bugs. This could be a scam.
Maybe the health dep’t can do an unscheduled inspection, but, sad to say, this immediately reminded me of the Wendy’s thing, and a possible scam.
That is supposed to happen at their locations in Thailand and China I think.

It’s been a couple years since I ate at a McD’s...a few weeks ago I was walking by on a Sunday and thought I’d get their 2 for 1 EggMcMuffin, but I found they don’t do that anymore. I guess I’ll check them out in another couple years...no loss!

one cockroach, maybe. It could crawl in while no one is watching, but to think five or six would have bugs is questionable.
Mcdonald”s pancakes come precooked and frozen. The Styrofoam
plates come stacked flat one upon another with no space between them. For bug parts to be in the pancakes and on the plate there would pretty much need to be collusion between two distributors. Not likely.
More likely? Woman leaves with food inserts insects comes back in pitching a bitch.
This lady never left the vicinity of the Restraunt. The bugs were embedded in the hashbrowns. Refund was given within 10 min of purchase.
