OK- Making an economic Armageddon retreat - what do I need?
Today | Me

Posted on 08/11/2011 7:49:26 PM PDT by dila813

Ok, I am out shopping for the perfect retreat to get away from the city and if required live out there without any resupply required.

What I have so far identified: 1. Plentiful Nearby Food Supplies 2. Lots of Land 3. Shelters - anything specific about the shelter other than insulation, wood heat, and wind power with back up generators? 4. Guns? 5. Ammo? 6. Tools? 7. Sanitation?

You can prevent a lot of dental problems using floss, proper brushing and black walnut tincture.

You know Velveeta is good for 20 years right?

Many regular supermarket foods last forever if you know which ones to buy.

The town I am looking at has a population of 250.

I think 5000 is too much.

I replied before reading that you had a good size group. With a group that size, you could have each person learn some skill to deal with emergency situations, like dental and medical.

we have some that are actually nurses but they won’t be the first ones to show up, they are in the group that will take up to 26 hrs to reach this location.

Since they are coming from so far away, there is a concern if they would ever make it.

Link?

You don’t need a concrete pumper do you?

This location can’t get anything in it bigger than a 1 ton truck.

250 isn’t enough to have all the skills sets necessary for modern life nor to sustain those skill as people die off.

“You know Velveeta is good for 20 years right?”

I don’t know where you got that but Kraft places the fresh shelf life at 5-7 months and considering the protein content, even with the sodium phosphate content, I wouldn’t expect Velveeta to last 20 years, not by a long shot.

fresh shelf life at 5-7 month....that is for freshness

the stuff lasts forever if you keep it in a dark and cool location.

This I know.

That doesn’t include my group ... that is just current residents.

250 is plenty when they are country folk that know how to live in the area.

If possible, look for a spring on the land. It can provide drinking water, irrigation, and sometimes a power source if the flow rate is right, and doesn’t need pumped.

Look for land that aids with hiding and defense. Some terrains create optical illusions, a passing raider may think they can see everything, when really you could be standing 10 feet from them and they’d never notice. If you find a piece of land like this, use it. Place any buildings where they’d be hidden from the road, but where you can see who approaches from them.

Build underground, if possible. The insulation is great, you’re practically in a bomb shelter already, and it makes your buildings harder to find and break into. Just make sure to have alternate escape routes just in case.

Build your animal shelters so that they’re either attached to the house, or have a covered walkway between them. Those animals will need care during the worst hail, ice, and snow storms. You can’t afford a broken leg.

If you decide to build hidden compartments anywhere, please don’t make the “doorknob” from a statue, book, or light fixture. Those are such common plot devices it’s laughable.

I’m sure I’ll think of more later, this is from a sleepy mind right now ;)

There is a creek going right through the property and underground is out because these trees are very sensitive to any kind of ground disruption.

If I dig a hole within 15 feet of a tree deep enough to cut into its roots, the tree will die.

That is one reason I was worried about building underground storage for grain. I have to figure out how far away from the trees it will be and I might have limited options. Otherwise, I might put the house there and then run out of room.

The road isn’t much of a road. It is more a trail than a road. If SHTF, we won’t go in and out via the road and will only walk. The road will disappear in 3 months and this road is 50 miles long with nothing along it. So we have a 50 mile long road that will basically disappear.

Dude...you could have googled it! http://oregontrail.com/hmh/site/oregontrail is one site. It’s been a board game for a long time. You have to choose what items to take with you on the 19th century wagon trail journey to Oregon, as over 500,000 people did. Making due with available items, prioritizing items to take with you, working with limited financing, self-reliance are all lessons that can be learned while playing the game. It might help you start thinking the way you want to.
