I've heard varying quotes of how many daily users there on on Free Republic and even the most modest of them has my ire growing. Do ya wonder why?
I know what you mean but the Boss specifically mentioned that paid memberships would make us commercial. Donations keeps us free from interference. He’s comfortable with FR the way it is. And we enjoy it too.
Freepathons may be taking longer since President Hopey-Changey but I don’t want FR to change.

I don’t either - you just hear frustration speaking in my posts. Sorry.
And when I get my raise in the very near future
Right on and big time congrats to a couple of excellent FReepers!
I too have had good fortune, and decided to give back to my most visited and depended on website, FR.
I'm a dollar a day guy, heck, I used to spend that on a Daily News and a bag of Fritos for breakfast, and that was back in the day when a dollar really was something.
C'mon folks, $5 a month, isn't FR worth it? If FR cost a quarter a day, you wouldn't think that's a stone cold bargain?
Git 'er done for for FR!!!
BTTT!
Did you bump your head before you wrote that? That's a bunch of BS when the NY Slimes is free, the WashCompost is free, Drudge is FRee. No one new would join FR unless you could see if its content.
I hear that! Don’t be sorry. We all want FR to continue. And we don’t know what would be best. Looks like Jim has looked into options and they just don’t “fit” us. We’re still “alive”. Look at the number of new monthlies! :-)
That is unfortunate to read
I dont question Jim n family their money. Simply cannot understand those who criticize. We here at FR are capitalists. why would we bdgrudge Jim this? Scatching her head. .
I’m a monthly donor...$40 per.
How many websites have you paid to join just to browse?
There are some who have listened to zottees that have spouted it doesn’t cost that much to run FR. The thread Jim’s post was on had FReepers that run smaller websites and they were amazed that FR has very little down time, serves as many pages as it does, on the amount of money it gets. I think that some just don’t understand the miracle that is FR.
I get that proxy message every time I ping the South Carolina list. I think it's because of the large number of FReepers on the list.
You get the message AFTER your ping has posted. It can be ignored.
Here's a tip: put your name last on the list. If the ping shows up in your comments, it worked. I've never had one to fail yet.
That is for sure.
We love you, Dolly.
You hang in there...
Thanks for reminding me. I think my card expired, so I just renewed. If it hasn’t expired, FR will be getting 2 payments each month :).
Bumpity-Bump-Bump-Bump! :)
I think that’s key to getting more active donation. Many people are willing to help defray known costs, but they aren’t interested in coughing up for some internet entrepreneur’s windfall. When in doubt, the wallet won’t come out.
Why? Have you told them this? What other info do you gather on them? Do you try to match up their user names with the real names on checks received though the mail? Do you keep track of their mailing addresses? What do you do (or plan to do) with this information? Do the people who join your ping lists know that this investigation is part of the bargain? That's creepy.
I wouldn't pay the browse fee but Jim and I have had this discussion many times.
FR is his site and Jim can fund it any way he chooses, but since I both post and fund FR, I am able to offer my paid for opinion.
I have a choice, I could free load, like the majority of the FReepers, and the demonRATs, but I choose to pay my way.
It bothers me that so many of the FRreepers, never spend a dime and every quarter, those of us that financially support FR, become frustrated at a system that's is supported like the volunteer fire department.
What is the value of Free Republic?
As conservatives, we claim to be about voluntary action to get what we want. What better way could there be than to fully fund this board? Today"
Thanks for the ping. I have had trouble with the “post” in the past; I’ve said it has a hair trigger, it’s strange!
I’m going to re-sign up for a monthly donation. I used to do it years ago. I mention this now because one of the reasons (if not the only real reason) I stopped was because of the following: (excuse me if it’s rather rambling, I’m not used to being up and FReeping at this time on a Saturday haha)
For some reason, the monthly donation was rejected by my bank (or at least it didn’t go through one month, as I noticed online). It then went through the next month and I didn’t think much of it. A few months later, I had to get my account info changed, and then, as part of my update to all my monthly “bills”, I changed the info here at FR. But the change didn’t seem to “stick”, and the monthly donations never re-occured. I got lazy and never tried to track down the issue.
Anyway, I thought Misters Robinson might want to hear about this so I’ve pinged you both. Maybe this happens to many (?). It’s strange.
Anyway, I’m going to go “re-activate” the monthly now. I’ll say it, it’s “only” going to be $5, but as Lazamataz said once on a really funny donation thread from a long time ago, “If only 50,000 donated $5, then that would be $250,000”, or something like that. Which was/is mathematically true. The thread was funny though because Lazamataz made some mathematical error in making such a case and spent the next 20 posts doing similar calculations with various amounts and donor numbers, intentionally I’m sure; it had me in stitches! That whole exchange alone made me want to donate!
Thanks again for the ping, I think it’s reasonable to make such a donation.
