Girl with no arms and legs says cheerleading try-out is unfair after she fails to make school squad

Nebraska girl born with no arms and legs has blamed unfair scoring after she failed to make her school's cheerleading squad three years in a row.

Julia Sullivan, 16, has complained to the school board after she said she was given 'no accommodation for her disability' during try-outs.

The wheelchair user did not make the team after she received a low score in the jumps/kicks category of the trials.

Miss Sullivan got her highest marks in the communication skills and enthusiasm/spirit categories.

The Aurora High School student, who said that she likes to dance, said: 'I just think it would be fun.'

What a terrific story. Thanks for sharing that (I could almost visualize that entire scenario). And while our disabled can do many things, such as the gentleman you wrote about, legless and armless teenagers cannot do the kicks necessary for cheerleading.

btw, I do know a bit about disability as my mom is completely blind. So I don’t intend to be cruel here but there are limitations. Some are self imposed however. I wish my mom would realize there is more she could do to be more independent.

I'm thinking of a new TV show, The Bionic Girl.

I’m not big and strong enough to play football. Do I get to sue the Washington Redskins?

Reasonable accommodation does not mean you can win. It means you are enabled to produce a substantially equal product or service.

"We know," the kids protest "but we need a third base bag."

You're gonna go to Hell for that.

I am not a minority, a woman, or disabled. There must be a lawsuit in their somewhere.

No, you HAVE to be able to see, particularly well, in fact, to fly a plane.

Then how do pilots takeoff, fly and land in the dark with heavy fog? It's called IFR, instrument flight rules. If you can read the instruments, you can fly a plane. I don't see why instruments couldn't be set up for a blind person.

Some disabilities can be overcome. Apparently these days loss of your legs can get you running even faster with special springy artificial running legs.

Wouldn’t that bee a hoot? Anyone could get in free as long as they wear a cheerleading uniform! ha. Might be worth paying to see!

I’ll bet she’s a big fan of the show “Glee”.

If you get my drift.

She is probably trying to emulate one of the characters.

The guy I referenced worked at the Customs Buiding (not really customs, just federal offices) in the early to late 80's. If there are any federal employees who may have worked there here on FR, it would be great to know what became of him. I got my territory changed from the old city district to a home office job.

Does your mom have a speech synthesis application for a laptop? My mom had ALS and used her old Tandy Word Processor to talk right up until the end. It made her life much richer.

I guess I’ll be the dissenter here. I’m just not sure why a crippled girl couldn’t be a cheerleader. There’s nothing in the article to indicate that this is competitive cheerleading. This girl is equally capable as anyone else of sitting on the sidelines and doing her part to fire up the crowd.

Requiring a crippled girl to do jumps and kicks to make a high school cheerleading squad strikes me as quite unreasonable.

Do you suffer from testicular imbalance, damaging your self esteem? One hanging low can cause cruel attacks you most likely have never recovered from since childhood!

Believe it or not, I’ve heard a blind man say that he could even pilot an airplane if he wanted to. Please!

I watched a late-night movie once (had to be a recycled made-for-tv one) where a bunch of blind people are on their way to a convention when the plane crashes on a mountain top and the only survivors were the blind people.

The dialogue was so unintentionally hilarious that you had to ask how this got past the script editors. I recall that as the blind people wandered around, a fight broke out about who would lead the group and one blind guy said to his blind rival "We'll SEE about that!"

Definitely a low light in filmmaking.
