Staffordshire Hoard 'to help rewrite history'
BBC ^ | July 2, 2011 | Unknown

A haul of Anglo-Saxon gold discovered beneath a Staffordshire farmer's field could help rewrite history, experts say.

Historians believe the Staffordshire Hoard could hold vital clues to explain the conversion of Mercia - England's last great Pagan kingdom - to Christianity in the 7th Century.

The hoard was found buried on a farm in Staffordshire in July 2009.

The 1,500 pieces of gold are thought to be the spoils of an Anglo-Saxon battle.

'Warring kingdoms'

TV historian Dan Snow believes the find has the potential to rewrite the history books.

Speaking on BBC1's The Staffordshire Hoard, he said the conversion of Mercia "marked the beginning of a new era in English history".

"The Staffordshire Hoard is helping shine a light on exactly how and when the transformation occurred," he explained.

Historian David Starkey said: "England, remember, isn't England at all; England has yet to be invented - the word barely exists.

"Instead, there were these rival warring Anglo-Saxon kingdoms that behaved like the worst kind of takeover bidders of the city.

"They decapitated each other - literally, not metaphorically.

Sounds more like Shakespear is perfecting a few lines of dialog, rather than rewiting the entire script.

That was a serious collection of loot, hard to invest back then. A pillager just never could find a good money changer when they needed one.

I've forgotten...Do we rape and then pillage...or do we pillage first?
Never could remember that.

-——rewriting history is no big deal——

That’s what historians do for a living. Take a fact and extrapolate beyond reason toward a specific agenda

OK..sack...pillage...loot...THEN burn...well...I remember something about the raping when I was recruited....yes...yes it was mentioned somewhere in all that.

Truth to tell, I'm still not all that sure of the difference between sacking and pillaging. Must be a technique thing. I'll just watch the others and see whats what.

And whats all this about 'plunder'...same as looting I suppose. I do wish we all had the same playbook with this barbarian thing. Make it all a bit easier.

I think the word ‘rapine’ was invented to cover all the bases. What with all the hard work, leaving one short of breath, they wanted the easiest one-word description possible.

The English language is colorful and has many words of similar meaning to allow one to find exactly the right word to find the precise definition one is looking for.

Therefore the English language has the most words of all languages, just because the users are always ready to bring a new word into use from either foreign sources or by invention. You can ‘google’ that.

Which brings us full circle. With everybody off raping something, a thunderstorm blew in, erased the site of evidence of burying all this gold.
