HAPPY TUESDAY TO AMYS PLACE!
There is a story behind this picture.
Always known as a photographer who would take almost any chance if it meant getting the picture, Gene Smiths good luck throughout the Pacific deserted him on May 23, 1945. While on the east coast of Okinawa photographing an essay titled "A Day in the Life of a Front Line Soldier," he was seriously wounded by a Japanese shell fragment. The missile hit him in the head cutting both cheeks, injuring his tongue and knocking out several teeth. Characteristically, he was taking pictures at the time and the fragment passed through his left hand before entering his cheek just below the eye and near the nose. His comment in the hospital later: "I forgot to duck but I got a wonderful shot of those who did... my policy of standing up when the others are down finally caught up with me."
Ernie Pyle, another great war correspondent, who was on Okinawa with Smith and was not so lucky, wrote of him, "Gene Smith is an idealist, trying to do great good with his work but it will either break him or kill him."
Smiths war wounds cost him two painful years of hospitalization and plastic surgery. During these years he took no pictures and whether he would ever be able to return to photography was doubtful. Then one day, during his period of convalescence, Smith took a walk with his two children and even though it was still intensely painful for him to operate a camera, came back with one of the most famous photographs of all time: "A Walk to Paradise Garden." This memorable image was to serve as the final picture in the famous "Family of Man" Exhibition.

Yep...I thought I had “jet-lag”, but I think I am homesick for Hawaii.
By the Way, The “Lyin’ King” isn’t as nearly popular there as he was a few years ago! };-)

Thank you for that great story! It resonated with me, as my Dad was a Navy Photographer in WW2. I grew up with photos of kamikazes crashing into ships, the invasion of Okinawa from the viewpoint of an amphibious craft, Iwo Jima, Occupied Japan, China, and many other South Pacific Islands. Some of the pictures were brutal, but they instilled in me a love of America, History, The South Pacific, and my Dad.
Once, on the History Channel, I briefly saw my Dad as a 17 year old, piloting the landing craft onto the beach at Okinawa. I knew it was him because of the numbers painted on the bow.

Bedlam
July 20, 2011
Englands Imperial War Museum is housed in a building in London that was a former location of the Bethlem Royal Hospital, a care center for the mentally ill. The hospital was commonly known as Bedlam, which gradually became a term used to describe scenes of chaos and madness.
Its ironic that the War Museum would occupy Bedlams former location. As you walk through the museum, in addition to stories of heroism and sacrifice in wartime, you also find bone-chilling accounts of the madness of mans inhumanity to man. From the exhibits about modern genocide and ethnic cleansing to the one on the Holocaust, it is evil on display.
Solomon observed mankinds propensity for evil, describing it as those who rejoice in doing evil, and delight in the perversity of the wicked (Prov. 2:14). While this may describe much of the world around us, followers of Jesus have a refreshingly different way to handle life. Paul challenged us: Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good (Rom. 12:21). Christ-centered actions such as living morally (v.17), making peace (v.18), and treating our enemies with care (v.20) will affect the world for good.
If each of us were to live as a reflection of Gods love, perhaps there would be a lot less bedlam.
The godless and sinful everywhere
Are objects of Gods love and care,
But they will always know hopeless despair
Unless His love with them we share. D. De Haan
A despairing world needs caring Christians.
Read: Romans 12:9-21
Those who leave the paths of uprightness . . . rejoice in doing evil, and delight in the perversity of the wicked.
Proverbs 2:13-14
