Now we can attach names to the world's most famous make-out artists.

Among the images of the Vancouver hockey riots was a photo of a couple locked in passion, on the pavement amid the broken glass, the police and tear gas.

...

Family members of Scott Jones have identified their brother and son. They say he is working in Vancouver as a bartender and stand-up comic and that the young woman is his girlfriend, Canadian Alex Thomas.

...

"They were between the riot police and the rioters, and the riot police were actually charging forward, and Alex got knocked by a [police] shield and fell to the ground," Brett Jones, Scott's father told CBC News. "[Scott] was comforting her and gave her a kiss to say, 'It's going to be OK,' and the photographer just took the shot at that moment."

...

It reported that at Jones' mother "Megan Jones, was shocked to spot her son lying in the middle of the street

" 'It is something he would do, that's our boy. He has always lived in his own world, he's special like that. He doesn't always connect with what going on around him.

...

" 'I'd have to have my house flooded to get on the news, but he just has to kiss a beautiful girl,' she said."

Too many anti-romantic cynics around here...

Depends on your definition of romance. Does she want a man who will comfort her after she gets hurt in a riot, or one who's smart enough to keep her out of a riot in the first place?

I was keying in on parts of the video that weren’t being showcased, looking at what was going on away from the focal point of the video.

I watched one sequence until the camera went to another feed. It was being shot from a helicopter, and showed the roof of a building with smoke swirling around. But if you watched the small forms of people in the street far below, they were clustered around a car. You could barely make out the forms of people, legs, arms, torso and head, but no distinguishable features, they all looked like they were wearing black clothes.

But what I saw was a damaged car with people around it parked at an angle in the middle of the street. One guy came up and kicked one side, and there were people clustered around the passenger side.

I saw one guy walk around the front of the car, and people stepped away from him, the same way a school of fish disperses slightly when you extend your hand to them.

The guy turned and walked towards another group, and they dispersed slightly the same way. There was another guy on the other side of the car standing close to it, and the guy walked around the trunk towards him. He retreated a few steps, but apparently had no intention of moving further, and the smaller guy (apparently defending his car) clocked the guy with a roundhouse punch.

The bigger guy staggered back but didn’t retreat further, and the smaller guy advanced on him and belted him again, after which the guy staggered into a larger group who clustered around him, then the camera switched.

I was fascinated, because I doubt any other viewers watching the feed saw it, it was so small, inconsequential and out of focus. With all the stuff, unless you happened to latch onto it like I did, you would never see it.

It made me resolve to conceal carry everywhere I go now.

Heh, I think it is a lovely picture. To me, though, it just doesn’t fit the pattern of human behavior, though (unless you are watching one of the “Naked Gun” movies...:)

The long hot summer is just beginning, and I think a tremendous number of people have decided that they need to carry concealed everywhere they go. It's just smart.

But what that means is that in the coming weeks, the probablity that some stupid rioters are going to bump into the wrong fellow has dramatically increased.

What will the news say when that happens? I expect willful escalation of the tension.

Entwined? Her foot is between his knees on the ground. Hardly “entwined”.

Staged or not, her wearing too short of a skirt or not, him stealing a kiss or helping her after being knocked down, it doesn’t matter: it is a fantastic photograph.

A picture is worth a thousand words, and this one provides evidence for the phrase.

JIM CARR: Jim Carr again. Denis, I know that some in our audience don’t know the finer points of hockey. Could you tell them, for example, what is icing?

FRENCH GOALIE DENIS: Well, icing happen when the puck come down, bang, you know, before the other guys, nobody there, you know. My arm go comes out, then the game stop then start up.

JIM CARR: I see. What is high-sticking?

FRENCH GOALIE DENIS: High-sticking happen when the guy take the stick, you know, and he go like that. (HITS HIM WITH STICK NEAR FACE) You don’t do that. Oh, no. Never, never.

JIM CARR: Why not?

FRENCH GOALIE DENIS: Against the rules. You stupid when you do that, some English pig with no brains...

JIM CARR: Denis, what is slashing?

FRENCH GOALIE DENIS: Slashing is like that, you know? (SLASHES HIM WITH GOALIE STICK)

JIM CARR: Mm-hm. And there’s a penalty for that?

FRENCH GOALIE DENIS: Yeah. And for trip also, you know.

JIM CARR: Oh?

FRENCH GOALIE DENIS: (WHACKS AT LEG WITH GOALIE STICK) Like that. And for hook like this. (HOOKS ANNOUNCER WITH STICK) - And for spear, you know, like that.

JIM CARR: Mm-hm.

FRENCH GOALIE DENIS: All bad. You do that, you go to the box, you know. Two minutes by yourself, and you feel shame, you know.

JIM CARR: Mm-hm.

FRENCH GOALIE DENIS: And then you get free.

I did see a guy with a camera, long focal length lens and tripod walking around... Ever see the picture of the hippie broad, hanging way up a statue or something, in the nude, while forty black guys were trying to drag her down? Sometime in the 1965-1968 period. I think the Chicago riots.

Slapshot trailer. There’s no need for reckless violence in the streets outside the arena. Keep it on the ice where it belongs! :)

I like the picture. Let’s remember, these are professional rioters out there in Seattle/Vancouver, so we gotta have professional riot photographers!

I can’t imagine how his legs got into that position if he was just helping. Looks more like they decided to lie down side-by-side, then have some fun.

From what he said she got knocked down and he went down to cover her, if they shifted around a little they could have ended up like that. We can’t tell in a “moment” what happened, but I will take him at his word that he was just kissing her because she was scared and hurt rather than just trying to get some in the middle of the street.

Thanks. I tried to do a bit of that as well. I tried a couple of times to “pause” the feed that I was watching then I realized that it would resume in real time and I lost the amount of time that I was paused. All in all it was very informative.
