Pet pit bull mauls and kills 15-day-old baby

Pit bulls and other large dogs continue to maim and kill people. Is it because these dogs are aggressive and dangerous or are they owned by irresponsible and careless people?

Buster didn't have a history of being aggressive. He was a family pet, a year old and hyper like many young dogs. Buster's owner, 25-year-old Mallory Wildig had been staying at her mother's house following the birth of Darius on February 4 along with her 2-year-old son, Keylin Tillman. She would return home to feed Buster and let him outside. The times she couldn't get home a friend of her father would stop by to feed the dog. Wildig and her two children returned home on February 19. She had Keylin feed the dog, he was then let outside and given a bath afterward.

After reading to the children in Keylin's room she turned a movie on for Keylin and took the infant to her room for a nap. After closing the door she returned to Keylin's room and laid down with him for his nap. The dog was on the floor near them. Her cell phone woke her up about 10 minutes later. She went to check on Darius and found him on the floor dead.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety report said she, “discovered that Darius was dead and had been mauled and partially consumed by Buster."

The report said she sobbed throughout her initial interview with Detective Sheila Goodell. According to Mlive.com Wildig told the detective when she found her son his bassinet was tipped over and Darius was on the floor.

According to the police report Wildig said, “When I walked into the room, there was blood on the bassinet and he just looked like a little doll on the floor. It felt like all of this was a nightmare.”

Charges of involuntary manslaughter and cruelty to animals were sought against Wildig, but the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office declined to authorize charges. lamazoo County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Carrie Klein said, “This was her baby. She loved her baby. She was traumatized by what happened.”

Klein said to charge Klein there there would have be gross negligence showed.

Klein said, “Nobody ever saw any aggressive or violent tendencies from the pet at all. There was no way for the mother to know it was going to attack and kill someone. It was not gross negligence on her part to have the dog running loose in the house with the baby in the bassinet. She had no way of knowing the dog was going to do what it did.”

Buster was euthanized and an autopsy showed the dog's stomach was full of food.

Last month, Saquina Jubeark, a mother of three little boys, ages 2, 4 and 5 said she left the room they were in to get something out of the stroller. When she returned to the room where the boys were she saw her Cane Corso tearing at the 4-year-old. The little boy died from being bitten in the head and neck.

According to neighbors the home was like a zoo with the Cane Corso, a pit bull, a German Shepherd, a parrot and a snake.

Neighbors said it took 10 firefighters to remove the dogs from the home.

Nydailynews.com reports Kenny Riser the superintendent of the building said "People were scared of those dogs. The dogs belong to the husband, who is seldom here. This was a tragedy waiting to happen."

Shelbra Freeman, 72-years-old saw her neighbors pit bull loose and was trying to let them know when the dog turned on her.

Another neighbor heard the dog barking and when she went outside she saw Freeman near her yard. wyff4.com reports her neighbor Erica Sykes said, "(Freeman) was just laying here screaming for help and she had blood running everywhere. So, I just wrapped her arm up with a towel and squeezed it real tight and just tried to help her breathe and calm down because she was still screaming .All I was worried about was just helping her. I mean, it was shocking."

Another neighbor said, "I ran over there. She was sitting up with her ear lobe chewed off and blood all over her arms and, I mean, it was just horrible." Freeman is recovering in a hospital.

Chad McBride from the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office said the dog is being quarantined for 10 days and the owner, David Milner, has been cited for no proof of rabies and dog running at large.

"She had no way of knowing the dog was going to do what it did.”

Dude, it's a bull terrier. Geez.

“As I’ve said, having debated pit bull owners/supporters for pages and pages of FR posts, I now realize that death toll is just fine with pit bull owners - they don’t want breed specific laws and they don’t want the banned breed - they want the rest of us to ‘get used to it’ while telling us we are ‘ignorant’ etc.
I know pit lovers think I’m full of it. Guess what I think of pit bull lovers who want the rest of us to shut up and get used to dogs killing and eating babies?”

My Dobermann grabs my hands and tries to pull them from the keyboard.

Sometimes, he stands up and blocks my view of my laptop screen.

Maybe he’s trying to tell me something, too...:)

I’m not a breeder or any kind of expert, but an American Pit Bull is a different breed than a Bulldog. I’ve never heard of an American Bulldog, but I have heard of the English Bulldog. Could be a mixup in names....

Like the horse that just fell on and killed a 12 year old at a local show?

Ban horses.

Christopher Reeves would agree.

Or the bulls and hogs that maim and kill farm folks every year?

Ban meat animals.

Screw it.

People are killed by some kind of animal every day in this country.

Let’s just kill them all.

Hippos kill 300+ people a year and there are only a few thousand of them in the whole world.

Ban hippos.

You’re ridiculous and hysterical.

Gosh, Don...I’m terribly sorry to hear about your collie.

I’ll keep him in my prayers.

Seven is way too young.

I feel guilty now for grieving the loss of my 14 year old Ibizan Hound, Jack.

I had him so long I can’t remember *not* having him, if that makes any sense.

It was like he’s always been here.

God bless you for your rescue/rehab efforts.

I did the same for Dobes for about 13 years, all by myself.

It was expensive, hard work but they all turned out to be well worth it.

Even the ‘basket cases’ left here for their permanent homes, happy and stable again.

Now I’ve got 3 Ibizan and 1 Portuguese Podengo Medio rescues.

Three of my other Ibizan rescues have since passed away, after having long, happy lives.

Wanna know *the* most common cause of death for children in the US?

_Their own parents_, usually their mother.

Some kids would probably be much better off being raised by dogs.

Ban parents.

“On a thread where a pit has killed and eaten a family member”

The dog did not eat the baby.

Your hysteria/phobia is getting the best of you.

Once you start twisting the details, you lose all credibility.

IMO, this story reeks of the same stench that surrounded another ‘pit kills and eats baby’ story not that long ago.

Turns out the mother killed the baby and literally threw it outside to the dogs.

They can’t testify in a court of law.

[but she got jailed, anyway]

_No one_ actually knows the -true- number for sure because anything that even *remotely* resembles a “pit” automatically gets lumped in with the “pit/’pit type’ dog statistics”.

Some of the ‘killer pits’ I’ve seen photos of were either Boxers or obvious Boxer crosses.

There will be _no_ truth in _any_ of the published statistics until/unless somebody starts DNA testing the offending dogs.

[which can be done for as little as $30 but I doubt anybody would do it, even if it were *free* because it *might* blow their whole agenda right to hell]

You must have been a powerful teenager to choke a pitt bull to death! Quite a feat. A neighbors Springer Spaniel picked up my Yorkie and started shaking him. We were in our garage and I grabbed his head and pounded it against the bumper of the car. The Spaniel finally let go of my Yorkie but there was no way I could have done any more damage to it.

For one, there’s no such thing as an “American Pit Bull Dog”.

Here’s everything you could ever want to know about the “bully” breeds.

Enjoy...:)

[I would *love* to see photos of your dog, though]

I have been told by several vets that dogs don't always recognize babies and small children as human. While they would not be aggressive with an adult, they will attack a child the same way they would attack a rabbit or a squirrel, as prey. That sounds like what the pitt in this story did.
