_No one_ actually knows the -true- number for sure because anything that even *remotely* resembles a “pit” automatically gets lumped in with the “pit/’pit type’ dog statistics”.
Some of the ‘killer pits’ I’ve seen photos of were either Boxers or obvious Boxer crosses.
There will be _no_ truth in _any_ of the published statistics until/unless somebody starts DNA testing the offending dogs.

Unfortunately the media loves the pitbull killer stories. Plus, there are so many pit crosses in shelters now, it might be difficult to find any dogs in some areas that don’t have any pit in them at all, so probably a lot of dog bites ARE by dogs with at least a drop of pit bull in them. I doubt most of the dog bites are perpetrated by well bred dogs of any breed, frankly.
