Natural protection against radiation (different kind of resveratrol)

In the midst of ongoing concerns about radiation exposure from the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan, scientists are reporting that a substance similar to resveratrol — an antioxidant found in red wine, grapes and nuts — could protect against radiation sickness. The report appears in ACS Medicinal Chemistry Letters.

Michael Epperly, Kazunori Koide and colleagues explain that radiation exposure, either from accidents (like recent events in Japan) or from radiation therapy for cancer, can make people sick. High doses can even cause death. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is currently evaluating a drug for its ability to protect against radiation sickness, but it is difficult to make in large amounts, and the drug has side-effects that prevent its use for cancer patients. To overcome these disadvantages, the researchers studied whether resveratrol — a natural and healthful antioxidant found in many foods — could protect against radiation injuries.

They found that resveratrol protected cells in flasks but did not protect mice (stand-ins for humans in the laboratory) from radiation damage. However, the similar natural product called acetyl resveratrol did protect the irradiated mice. It also can be produced easily in large quantities and given orally. The authors caution that it has not yet been determined whether acetyl resveratrol is effective when orally administered.

Umm, no, I don’t think so. All I had to read in this article was the acronym FDA, then stopped there.

For natural radiation defense for the body, can’t beat 6mg/astaxanthin daily. And, to address iodine deficiency (which amounts to 95% of all of us, according to at least one study)—— use J Crow’s lugol’s solution, 5% (not more than 8 drops per day, to achieve max of 50mg). A more conservative approach is 12.5mg (2 drops) per day, for maintenance. Reference cited: Dr. Brownstein

You didn't stop?

Just drink a half bottle of your favorite Cab, Merlot or Chianti every night and that will do the trick as well as put you in a better mood. LOL!

I think the better mood part is right but this is a different resveratrol.

Fears of low level radiation exposures are greatly over blown. There have been numerous studies of people working in the nuclear power industry. The cancer rates for nuclear workers have been shown to be far lower than in the general population despite exposure levels that have been on the average much higher.

The offsite dangers are to people who have ingested or breathed radiactive fallout. The amount of fallout from the Japanese reactors is miniscule and nothing to be concerned about. I work on a hazmat team; please believe me... there are far more dangerous problems to worry about.

The Use of 3,5,4′-Tri-O-acetylresveratrol as a Potential Prodrug for Resveratrol Protects Mice from γ-Irradiation-Induced Death

Clich here for images of plain cis & trans resveratrol. (Those piceids have a 6 carbon sugar added to cis & trans resveratrol.)

That trans is used in the same sense as trans fatty acids, aka trans fats. It refers to how parts of a molecule with a carbon to carbon double bond, the two in the middle with a double line. Cis means those modified benzene rings are on the same side of that middle carbon double bond. Trans means those modified benzene rings are on opposite sides of that middle carbon double bond.

Plain benzene, C6H6, is often shown as a hexagon with a circle inside of it. A carbon is at each vertex of the hexagon, and hydrogen is assumed.

That's your organic chemistry lesson for the day. You're welcome. I linked the images of cis & trans resveratrol because it's an oversize one.

Is such a thing available at the local health food store?

I’ve read kombucha (fermented tea) is a protection against radiation poisoning. I brew the stuff and have enough SCOBYs to give away if anyone wants them. They reproduce.

Thanks.

What is/are

SCOBYs?

Will see what I can track down around here.

I've been brewing kombucha for two years. I have three jars of it going at all times. My husband drinks more than I as he drinks probably a couple of bottles a day.

A bottle at a health food store is about $4.00 but it can be brewed for pennies. It is fun trying different flavors.

I'll be glad to give a SCOBY to anyone who wants one if they will pay the postage. I am throwing my excess ones away.
