Prayer for a Perfect Easter

When one woman gets sick on Easter, she relies on family and the power of prayer to save the day.

By Mary Lou Reed, Torrance, California

Easter is my favorite day of the year. I love all the preparations that go into it.

But the night before, I lay in bed feeling miserable: headache, chills, body aches and a fever.

I can’t be sick on Easter, I thought. What will happen if I’m not there to get everything ready?

I hosted the big family gathering every year. The grandkids hunted for eggs while I prepared a feast: ham, rosemary potatoes, candied yams, green beans, rolls, salad, chocolate cake. It was perfect. But now with me stuck in bed, our celebration would be ruined.

Lord, please let me have Easter here, I asked in the dark.

But when I woke up early that Easter morning, I felt worse than ever. I couldn’t make it out of bed, much less hide Easter eggs or cook a ham.

I called my daughter Kim. “I guess we won’t be having Easter this year,” I said sadly.

“Of course we will!” said Kim. “We’ll take care of everything. I’ll be right over, Mom. Don’t worry.”

But it won’t be the same, I thought as I drifted back to sleep. How could I do this to my family, getting sick on Easter?

I awoke sometime later to the smell of ham, rosemary and chocolate cake. And the sound of laughter throughout the house. The whole family had arrived.

Later, Kim poked her head into my bedroom. “You look better,” she said. “The egg hunt is in full swing. The kids are having a great time.”

So my family found the plastic eggs I had bought. And my recipes, judging by the delicious smells. If I didn’t know better I would think Easter was going on just fine without me!

“Mom, we’ve watched you cook for us for years,” Kim said, offering me a spoonful of candied yams to try. “We’ve learned a few things by now.”

The yams were perfect. Just, I was sure, like everything else.

As everyone sat down together and feasted on the wonderful dinner, I said my own special grace, thanking God for answering my prayers, and for reminding me that it was he—not me—who made Easter perfect.

Welcome To Sunday At Amy's Place

~Jesus Appears To Mary Magdalene~
John 20:11-16 (NIV)
11 but Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she
bent over to look into the tomb

12 and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus' body had
been, one at the head and the other at the foot.

13 They asked her, Woman, why are you crying? They have
taken my Lord away, she said, and I don't know where
they have put him.

14 At this, she turned round and saw Jesus standing there, but
she did not realise that it was Jesus.

15 Woman, he said, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking
for? Thinking he was the gardener, she said, Sir, if you have
carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will
get him.

16 Jesus said to her, Mary. She turned towards him and cried
out in Aramaic, Rabboni! (which means Teacher).

Too Good To Be True?
April 24, 2011

In the 1980s, John Knoll and his brother Thomas began experimenting with a computer program to manipulate images. Software companies thought they were crazy, because photographers didn’t use computers at that time. Initially the brothers called their program Display, then Imaginator, and finally they settled on Photoshop®. Today Photoshop® is used by amateurs at home and professionals in business around the world. A San Jose Mercury News article noted its place in popular language. When something looks too good to be true, people say, “It must have been Photoshopped.”

On the first Easter morning, the women who took spices to anoint the body of Jesus found the tomb empty and heard angels say, “He is not here, but is risen!” (Luke 24:6). When the women told this to the disciples, “Their words seemed to them like idle tales, and they did not believe them” (v.11). Nonsense! Mind-boggling! Too good to be true!

If someone manipulated the evidence, then millions of people around the world gather today to celebrate a myth. But if Jesus conquered death, then all He said about forgiveness, power to change, and eternal life is real.

Because Christ has risen and lives today, this news is too good not to be true!

Up from the grave He arose,
With a mighty triumph o’er His foes;
He arose a Victor from the dark domain,
And He lives forever with His saints to reign. —Lowry

The resurrection is a fact of history
that demands a response of faith.

Read: Luke 24:1-12

Their words seemed to [the disciples] like idle tales, and they did not believe them. —Luke 24:11
