What I'm trying to do is build a custom AR with configurations similar to the pics attached. Primarily the forends and front part of the furniture. Including a bipod.
AR 15.com is a good place to start.
Porn ping!
I go to CombatHunting.com. Here is their AR-15 M16 M4 page.

Good prices. Out the door the day you order.
The most major feature you want (the 1-8 twist barrel) is invisible. The one in 8 twist lets you shoot the 80 grain bullets and that opens the door to a wider world. A 223 with 80 grain bullets can kill game animals and hit targets 1000 meters away; the standard 55-gr bullets can’t.
Blackthorne Products has some remarkably priced AR kits in the bull barrel, free floated config you are looking for.

I don’t like ‘big’ scopes on the AR type rifles.
I prefer something like the ACOG, but I guess it’s all about what you are using the rifle for. For anything out far enough to need a scope that big, I’d be using a rifle that begins with a ‘7.62x’.(preferably a .308)
Thanks for what is bound to be a very cool thread.

Anything can be shipped EXCEPT a lower receiver or full rifle.

Built several AR’s with stuff I bought from them.
Highly recommended source.
Got to tell you, BE CAREFUL ABOUT BARRELS AND BOLTS !!!
Make sure that you headspace it properly. Get the headspacing tool, It’s worth every cent.
Bolts and berrels vary and you need to be sure the headspacing is correct. If you’re not comfortable doing this take it to a gunsmith, or buy a matched set bolt/barrel
Jams are your biggest issue once built.
First , try to get only Magpul magazines and nothing over 30 round capacity.Buy lots of them but just not over 30 unless you get the 100 shot barrel drums.
Second I found that depending on cheap or expensive ammo, I have two configurations.
One has a special heavier spring and a DPMS stock bolt
and the other is a lighter spring and an M16 bolt which has a slight bit more metal on it to make it heavier.
Switching between these for tournament and or just shooting cheapo ammo has completely eliminated jams.
Dude!! You need to decide what you want. You could just buy a Bushmaster upper from www.bushmaster.com or www.impact.com. or www.classicarms.com and look at Rockpoint Guns.
Also you have to decide what you want to use the weapon for; as in M-4 shorty adjustable stock for house entry and clearing. A target 16-20 inch barrel open combat or a bull barrel varmint style for mid range sniping. Once you know what you want it will be easier to build an upper.
