Ancient Peruvian site forces experts to re-think past

LIMA (AFP) – Archeologists have discovered a group of ancient tombs in the mountainous jungle of southeastern Peru they say is as important as the discovery of the lost city of Machu Picchu.

The tombs belonging to the Wari culture were found on the jungle-covered eastern slope of the Andes in Cuzco department at a long-abandoned city thought to be the last redoubt of Inca resistance to Spanish colonial rule.

The Waris, a pre-Inca civilization, had an enormous cultural impact in the Andean region between 600 and 1200. The Inca empire (around 1400 to 1532) was the largest pre-Columbian empire in the Americas.

"It is an impressive Wari find in the Cuzco jungle that opens a new chapter on archaeological research and forces us to re-write history," said Juan Garcia, the cultural director for the Cuzco region, as he announced the discovery late Wednesday.

"The discovery is one of the most important ever, and is comparable to Machu Picchu... and the Lord of Sipan," said Garcia, referring to the 1987 discovery of the tomb of an ancient Moche lord.

I thought the same thing. No comparison to so much of the other stone work - or even the stonework in Chaco Canyon and dozens of other sites throughout New Mexico.

When will we ever teach the real history of the Americas.

Even Cortez and his gang were blown away by the cities and civilization they found - cities that they wrote were far beyond anything in Europe...and then they proceeded to destroy it...for gold.

Another thing that irritates me...they continue to repeat the falsehood that these cultures had no written records.

It's well documented that they did - they had books of records on paper - their language was in our alphabet letters - but there were many.

The Spaniards and church ordered them all destroyed - a couple, thanks to a priest, survived.

But there was a deliberate plan to destroy and cover up as much evidence of an advanced civilization as possible - and we haven't climbed up out of that even yet.

I'm sure you know all this - It just still infuriates me...especially in regards to teaching the history of the Americas in the schools. Islam, yes. But not the history of the lands we live on.

“their language was in our alphabet letters” I would like to know more about “our alphabet”, unless you are talking about post conquest things written after the Aztecs learned Spanish. The many codices destroyed by Bishop Landa and others were a terrible loss to historical knowledge, and only a few survive, but they were NOT in our alphabet letters. Then, of course, much of their population was killed by European diseases. Hopefully as we increase our knowledge about these cultures it will be included in our school books.

Machu Picchu Of Northern Peru (Chachapoyas - White, blonde haired people)

There are accounts of white, blond haired' people from the ancient, true Mayans.

The Mayan Calendar was called the Aztec calendar until a few years ago....

Also, an interesting book, "He Walked the Americas"

by L. Taylor Hansen, came out in the - '60's. The author spent 20 years traveling and compiling the legends of Native Indian tribes of the Americas. Quite a read.

I saw the Senior Saipan exhibit in Lima about 10-years ago...it is spectacular and the Peruvians did a nice presentation/interpretation job.

Peru is a treasure trove of cultural gems...where I worked in the Andes it seemed like every ridge and vista point was a burial site. Wonderful country.

re: young girls they do get Wari.

Ah, yes, but mature Wari women are the Wariest:

She may get Wari, women do get Wari,
Wari-ing that same llama dress
But if she’s Wari,
Try a little tenderness

A very beautiful old song, that.......
One of my all times favorites too......

In a more modern light perhaps we should just sing that Bobby McFerrin ditty....

Don't Wari, Be Happy

What exactly is that? Did the Wari put ceremonial masks on the corpses they buried? A drinking gourd next to the deceased? It almost resembles an Egyptian or Asian burial, which would leave items next to the deceased for their use in the afterlife.

Has there been any speculation on the belief system of the Wari?
