MILWAUKEE – One of the men featured in a Visa credit card television commercial for having never missed a Super Bowl has died at age 79.

Though he wasn't able to make it to Texas, Bob Cook watched from his Milwaukee area hospital bed as his beloved Green Bay Packers beat the Pittsburgh Steelers to win the 45th Super Bowl earlier this month.

Was she not a Steeler fan for the other 5 SBs they won? And it's not like Green Bay had never won a SB before last Sunday.

Sorry to sound snarky, but there are generations of NFL fans in Buffalo, Minnesota and other cities who NEVER saw their team win the big one. Your mother and this gentlemen saw multiple wins for their teams.

He actually has key information about him: that he is willing to go on national television to point out that he considers his hobby more important than his family. That’s a keypiece of knowledge.

Knowledge? I didn't hear him say it was more important than his family. That sounds like projecting, not knowledge. But if some knowledge is what you are interested in, here is some. The guy owned a travel agency in Milwaukee and leading tour groups was part of his job.

Who's wedding did he miss? Some niece or nephew who didn't give a damn if he was there as long as they still got a check? Who's birth? A great grandchild who he'll get to see a day or two later?

Now a bunch of people jump on a guy who just passed who for all they know might have been a wonderful person. But because he did something that they think is "stupid" he somehow morphs into 'jerk.'

So much for 'speaking well of the dead.'

My error, the person you were defending, their statement was not what was said in the advertisement, it was not true.
Then again, I don't feel going to a family wedding or celebrating a child's birth, means the chips are down, in our family it is more of a celebration.

Then there’s this woman....

A woman had 50 yard line tickets for the Super Bowl. As she sat down, a man came along and asked her if anyone is sitting in the seat next to her.

“No,” she said, “the seat is empty.”
“This is incredible,” said the man. “Who in their right mind would
have a seat like this for the Super Bowl, the biggest sporting event
in the world, and not use it?”
Somberly, the woman says, “Well... the seat actually belongs to me. I
was supposed to come here with my husband, but he passed away.
This is the first Super Bowl we have
not been to together since we got married in 1967.”

“Oh I’m sorry to hear that, that’s terrible. But couldn’t you find
someone else - a friend, or relative or even a neighbor to take the seat?”
The woman shakes her head,
“No, they’re all at the funeral.”

He did not say he missed those things like weddings, and births to be at the Super Bowl, he said he has missed some of those things but had not missed a Super Bowl, not the same thing at all.

And we don’t know why he missed some of those things.. Was he sick/hospital, out of the area on a job assignment, nursing a dying relative, attending a funeral, etc. etc. Who knows enough to judge the statement?

I'm just not clear on what your point is. We won and it was fun, and then we won some more and it was lots of fun, and then the expectation of winning developed, which mentally helps a team to win more and more, and we won more and more and it was tons of fun. And she enjoyed every minute of it, both the good and the bad, for that's the love of life. But if you want me to feel bad (or even less good) because some other team didn't get to win, I just won't do it. Now if you want to confiscate some Super Bowl wins from Dallas or San Fransisco, and those teams agree to give you their Lombardies, well... fine and dandy if it's done of their own free will. But I'll have none of this guilt stuff over winning.

We won, and it was fun. We lost, and it was still fun... just less fun. But I'm happy to read a story about an elderly Packer fan who got to enjoy his team's success. Good for him and good for the Packers.

Yes, I had the same reaction. What a total ass. Missing births and important family events to watch millionaires clobber each other.

These things get into your blood. I have been to every Belmont Stakes since 1966, so longer than there have been Super Bowls. I did also have a 41 year Travers Stakes streak which was probably more important to me, but I broke it two years ago to attend an overseas wedding. It was a very difficult decision for me. (Several years before I skipped driving my son up to Cornell when he moved in as a freshman.)

You think missing a family birth is a despicable thing?

Unless it's one of my own children or maybe grandchildren, I couldn't care less about others in the family giving birth. Just pop the kid out and call me when its old enough to talk. I got better things to do than sitting in a hospital waiting room waiting for somebody to have a baby.

Nor do I find them "cute." All the babies look the same to me. They cry all the time and crap in their pants. No thanks, I'd rather be watching football, painting the garage, waxing my car, getting a root canal, etc.

Wideawake --- wake up! It was a freaking TV commercial. Have you gone to every wedding you were invited to? I have sent regrets and a gift lots of times. Have you been there when every baby in your relationship was born? Other than my kids, I haven't. Have you ever been out of town when some unexpected event happens? Have you ever been sick and just couldn't go? Have you ever just said 'I'd rather not go?'

You are projecting your negatives reading that they neglected their wives or children when they said no such thing. They never once said they missed something important because of the Super Bowl. That was your impression, but it is not what they said.

These are people you know absolutely nothing about, but you are willing to damn them simply because they had a 'passion' for something that you don't care about -- which somehow makes you superior to them.

That's being a jerk in my book.
