MU Researcher Says the Next Large Central US Earthquake May Not Be In New Madrid

2000 years of Chinese records shows migrating mid-continent earthquakes

COLUMBIA, Mo. – This December marks the bicentennial of the New Madrid earthquakes of 1811-12, which are the biggest earthquakes known to have occurred in the central U.S.

Now, based on the earthquake record in China, a University of Missouri researcher says that mid-continent earthquakes tend to move among fault systems, so the next big earthquake in the central U.S. may actually occur someplace else other than along the New Madrid faults.

Mian Liu, professor of geological sciences in the College of Arts and Science at MU, examined records from China, where earthquakes have been recorded and described for the past 2,000 years. Surprisingly, he found that during this time period big earthquakes have never occurred twice in the same place.

In sum - the next earthquake might occur someplace else from where it happened before.

Brilliant!!

Besides shipping as many jobs as we can overseas to China, we apparently need to import Chinese here because we just don’t
have any native Americans that are experts in the field of earthquake geology.... At least none that MU could find.

Sad.

the guy should be a weather forcaster. Actual words from a weather forcaster in Lansing MI. “We will be getting 12” of snow over the next 24 hours although it might be less, or it could be more”

Not that anyone other than myself is actually going to read the actual press release (or the actual scientific journal article), but:

“Along with co-authors Seth Stein, a professor of earth and planetary sciences at Northwestern University, and Hui Wang, a Chinese Earthquake Administration researcher”

Seth Stein isn’t Chinese.

When the Yellowstone Caldera blows, it will take all the pressure off the NMF.

No problem.

Except I’ll be burial under a few feet of ash.

On the bright side, I will save on funeral costs.

Not too many ways one could be buried deeper cheaper. - If the New Madrid blows, we’re in Tennessee and looks like projections show where we’re located to end up on the COASTLINE with most of west Tennessee underwater. - I’ve a friend who lives in Colorado; if the Yellowstone Caldera blows, she’s in a bad place. - I’d like to move further east in Tennessee, out of Tornado Alley and where the weather is usually a little milder; but hubby’s not interested mostly ‘cause his mommy, who’s going on 88 apparently thinks this area is the navel of the universe. It also gets harder and harder to move when you get older; but I think I could if it came up.

And some day you'll be dug out. Like at Pompeii.

Yes. Not too many Chinese are named Seth Stein.

However, “Mian Liu, professor of geological sciences in the College of Arts and Science at MU”... Is Chinese.

That’s who I was referring to. I guess my original post was not clear.

Sorry.

I’ve lived in MO and TX in Tornado Alley all my life. Let’s see tornadoes, lightning strikes, falling trees, floods, fires, motorcycle wreaks, car wreaks, gunshot wounds, falls, sharp objects, earthquakes, volcanoes, swine flu, cancer, heart disease, ebola, ...

The only thing that worries me is Democrats.

Democrats worry me, too. We have neighbors out here (to whom we have been good neighbors) who are BIG Democrats who do not like us because we didn’t vote for and weren’t snowed by the Clintons. I put up with the rudest behavior and was treated disrespectfully in these neighbors’ home when Bill was messing around with the intern and lying under oath. (I hadn’t said a word about it; just got attacked out of the blue.) I don’t know if they voted for Obama or not; I’ve quit doing all the trying at being “neighborly”. I’m sure they can’t fathom that the Clintons and the Obamas are cut from the same cloth; and that the Clintons paved the way for the Communist/Socialist. I mean, we’ll still do anything we can for anybody, but I’m tired of years of mostly being ignored or treated disrespectfully. I think they’re from the old school that thinks that the Democrats are more for the “poor people” than the Republicans, and that anyone who’s a Republican is just uppity. Too bad.

I would like to move further east in hopes of getting away from the New Madrid thing and the tornados, also in hopes of maybe getting some milder weather. We have our place here set up pretty comfortable, but it wouldn’t do us much good under a hundred feet of ocean from the gulf after a New Madrid earthquake. Oh well; if I can just stay away from the Democrats, I guess I’m fairly safe.

earthquakes tend to move among fault systems

It's when they start operating outside the lines that you really gotta worry.

Or something like that.
