I am moving to Tucson, AZ for six months and I need an apartment. Where are the best places to live?

That settles it. If you’re the tennis anyone type, then Cat Foothills is the place for you. If you want to rent a house, the UA area has some interesting prospects. I’m surprised no one asked you if you are Mexican or AA or military or whatever. I will make a restaurant recommendation for you. Mi Niditos is by far the best Mexican food in this town—at least as far as what we have tried. It’s located in the area that most FReepers fear, but you’ll be all right no matter what color you are or how important or lowly you are. Be prepared to wait in line. And do not wander to the other restaurants around it. (unless some FReeper has a specific recommendation. We have tried a few around there and were disappointed.)

Lotta nice apartments in Sunrise/Swan rd area.

Views, up close to mountains (you're in the foothills), generally upscale neighborhoods around you but still reasonable prices.

Any place with a good air conditioner and good locks on the door.

You want to get over there real close to La Canada and Ina Road. There are rooms to rent and apartments. Just check Craigslist and the local paper. Puts you right next to the mall, hospital, restaurants away from the seedy elements.

Catalina Foothills area.

Migraine gave you a good recommendation. We really enjoy visiting this area when we drive over to Tucson.

Hmmm... a lot of people are mentioning the East Side with scorn... Don’t know where they’re talking about — definitions vary about what is the East Side.

And some parts are definitely seedier. I’d say to avoid anything around 22nd/Swan, 22nd/Craycroft, 22nd/Wilmot, always the advice we received from real estate agents too.

However, there are tons and tons of nice apartments over here on the East Side, we have sidewalks for walking, close to all sorts of national parks/forests. Even the county park that Loughner’s mother was (is?) in charge of...

....and the most conservatives and gun owners. And with more of a neighborhood, family feel than anywhere else I’ve lived in Tucson. Granted, for six months, that might not matter.

Depending where on the East Side, you are within 10 - 20 minutes of the base, U of A, downtown, museums, movies, malls.

There are quite a few apartment houses down here in Sahuarita/Green Valley and LOTS of empty houses for rent.

My brother lives on Oro Valley.. I was scoping some real estate sites that said 20% of the houses in his zip are unoccupied..... The prices have cratered... one could get a reasonable rental.

I used to live off Ina on the northwest side of town and liked it very much. Good quail hunting close by. It was definitely a bedroom suburb with little nightlife in those days, but I’m sure there are more restaurants and such now. Always felt safe walking around there. We did get burglarized once though. I would think you could rent a very nice house for a very modest price nowadays. Tucson is a most pleasant place to live.

Evenin’, Texan!

My son lived in apartments near the intersection of Kolb and Golf Links and at the intersection of Campbell and Ft. Lowell. Both were very nice, reasonable quiet, and close enough to wherever you want to be.

He now lives just east of Oracle and the Miracle Mile. I fear for his safety there - last 4th of July the fireworks show included gunfire in his parking lot.

There are actually some very nice places on Ft. Lowell, which is close in to town than the northwest side. It’s not too far from the Tucson Mall on Oracle and River Rd.

As always, your mileage may vary...

Its been a while since I posted this but I have moved to Tucson and its great. I live at The Greens, off N Kolb and have a golf course in my back yard. I love it here. The people are nice and I stay away from the southside. Lots of great restaurants. I dont need much else.
