Animal Food Pantries - Pet food pantry fills a growing demand
The Buffalo News ^ | February 3, 2011 | Anne Neville

Kathleen Hogan has been an animal lover all her life, but what makes her special is the helping hand she gives to thousands of other animals -- dogs, cats, birds, bunnies, hamsters, fish and others she will never even meet.

Hogan founded the Buffalo Companion Animal Network six years ago with her friend Rosanne Higgins to help find homes for pets. Two years after that, BuffaloCAN started AniMeals, which Higgins coordinates, a program that supplies free food to the pets of people who receive Meals on Wheels.

BuffaloCAN's work expanded a few years later when Hogan saw some disturbing sights as she visited pet owners in her North Buffalo neighborhood. In one home, she saw dogs being offered moldy bread; in another home, a cat's food bowl contained only lettuce.

"The pets were skinny and full of fleas," says Hogan. "So I would buy food, then wait until 2 in the morning, sneak over and put the pet food on their porches. My son used to say, 'Mom, you're going to get shot sneaking up on someone's porch!' "

Then she says, she had an idea: "There are human food pantries, why not a pet food pantry?"

Did she see actual evidence that a cat lived there? Maybe they had a guinea pig running loose, or a bunny. Maybe it was a cat that was a fan of Michelle Obama. Just sayin'...

Any good coupons currently for pet food, or great rebates, or freebies?

Just as there has to be a special place in Hell for those that abuse animals and children, there has to be a special place in Heaven for this lady.

When I was growing up one of my friends had a beagle who LOVED lettuce.

With the price of lettuce in the stores nowadays, WHO can possibly afford to feed fresh lettuce to a dog -- who, IF they happen to like it, can easily consume half a head of lettuc in one sitting.

Heartbreaking my little dog passed on Dec. 9th, I can’t even begin to tell you how much I miss him. My hubby called him shadow because he was always at my side. He told people he had a five foot rule from the wife lol. I said I wasn’t going to get another one and now I have a puppy lying by my feet because the hubby over ruled me. I love him how couldn’t I but I still miss my little shadow.

There is a 2 off purina one coupon. You can find small bags at various stores that are less than the coupon. Usually found hanging on a clip strip. I bought a huge amount of these at Kmart last year . There were priced .99 each.. Still feeding my dog on them.

I have an image of a pampered cat's dinner of Fancy Feast, or white albacore tuna 'presented' on a bed of lettuce, for garnish.

Not right now that I know of but a few months ago I got a ton of Chef Michaels dog food FREE with coupons and gave them to my sister-in-law for her dog. And a few months before that I gave her a few dozen FREE trays of Whiskas for her cat.
