There was a time, maybe thirty or forty years ago, before cable TV and cell phones, where one man could be so impressive in his accomplishments and force of personality, he would almost universally be recognized as the coolest man in America. His field could range from medicine, science, sports, politics or entertainment. Since the advent of the internet, though, this is no longer possible. Who, in your opinion, was the last "coolest man in America"?
Two people guessed Namath and NOBODY has agreed out of 235 or so posts.
Do the math.
+1 Steve McQueen.
No one is cooler than Elvis singing gospel.

In 1969, nine out of ten heterosexual male Americans over 13 knew and admired Joe Namath. You might find men who did far greater things. Men with more courage. Men with more athletic ability. Men who were much better looking. Men who were cooler. But you won’t find any man since that time who was so universally admired and envied by such a large percentage of the American male population. He truly was the last “coolest man in America”.
Is this a trick question? Has anyone said Santa Claus yet?
Yes! Steve #1 and Clint gets #2.
“Chode, or maybe The Comedian”
You need to get out more often.
I’ve got Elvis singing “How Great Thou Art” on DVD. There’s a lot of dust getting in your eyes watching that.
Not Slick Clinton? How about Al Davis? He’s still partially alive.
Never mind.
It sounds like you are describing John Wayne. We all loved the Duke but McQueen and Clint were cooler.
According to this thread it is not a widely held opinion either.
IMO, Ted Williams is still the coolest man in America.
“Steve McQueen is great, but what about Stephen Hawking? He does his own stunts too, plus is a physicist.”
Ouch!
Big E...this live version always gives me goosebumps.
My favorite memory is when Emma was in some cat outfit with a collar and spikes.
