There was a time, maybe thirty or forty years ago, before cable TV and cell phones, where one man could be so impressive in his accomplishments and force of personality, he would almost universally be recognized as the coolest man in America. His field could range from medicine, science, sports, politics or entertainment. Since the advent of the internet, though, this is no longer possible. Who, in your opinion, was the last "coolest man in America"?

Namath would not have been my choice but there was a time when he was extremely well known.
I do remember in Bear Bryant’s book, he said Namath was the best athlete he ever coached and Bear coached a lot of them.
Namath did not dodge the draft. He failed his Physical because of his knees and they were a mess. It did seem odd that an NFL player would fail a physical but I doubt Namath could have marched very far etc.

By “last” do you mean no longer alive?

Was it because of his hose commercial?
Very good point. Burt Reynolds was the only other man who could've pulled that off in 1969. Maybe, just maybe Muhammed Ali, but I don't think he would have had the balls to do it.

Namath doesn’t even rank on the Sporting News’ list of the 100 Greatest Football Players.
Ranks #100 out of 100 on the NFL rankings.
To be considered cool, you need to be cool for more than 2 weeks.

Jimi played a great guitar, but druggies can never be cool.
Ditto for John Lennon. Atheistic Commie New Agers can never be cool.

I must disagree. Since that time--late '60s, early '70s--a number of men have been more widely regarded as "cool": Steve McQueen, Clint Eastwood, and Tom Selleck among them. Joe Montana, even, would at least rank as Namath's equal. Namath was regarded as "cool" to some extent, but not by a "huge," overwhelming number, and it was more of a New York thing.
I was born in 1953, so I remember the era quite well.

Mickey Mantle, HE was the definition of cool. The chicks loved him, kids looked up to him, he drank and smoked and hit the ball a ton. He even made a nice corpse.

It is a fact.It is NOT a fact.
According to this thread it is not a widely held opinion either.

My Grandfather was probably the last cool person who I knew. And - his first name was Elmer - now that’s a cool name! So cool - none of our wives would allow us to use it for any of our son’s!
