Just a hunch...
The cat was making a big racket, and a neighbor took matters into their own hands.
Like I said, just a hunch.

I searched for pics of the castrated cat, but the only one on metro.co.uk seems to be a generic cat of the same breed

Well if the un-neutered cat was spraying regularly on someone else’s porch, I can see someone going to the trouble.
This happens sometimes when there is another cat nearby, the tom will come to the other cat’s house and do a “demonstration” of virility that involves spraying stuff all over. The owner of the house (the human one) frequently does not appreciate the finer aspects of pheromones and feline communications.

I’ve seen toms do this.
They can let out an amazingly huge stream up in the air behind them.
(You’d think this act meant squatting and letting out a stream like they do when they urinate)

we have an almost 5 month old male kitten....I couldn’t believe the “stream” he let loose in his cat box last night as I put him in his room for the night....he’s getting, ahem, cut in about 3 weeks...and NO, he does not, and will never, go outside (if we can help it.)

The cat was making a big racket, and a neighbor took matters into their own hands. So the cat manufactured sporting goods. Why should that bother the neighbor? That's no reason to rip the poor cat's nuts off!
