Am I the only one having problems connecting to Free Republic today?

Thank you very much. It was just a glitch and we will survive. What doesn’t kill us only makes us stronger. And we have had so many of these glitches lately, that we’re really getting a LOT stronger.

Jim,

You’re a great guy, and having this outstanding forum means the world to us.

I believe that this site (and some others), along with Talk Radio are the only dispensers of truth in the news and political spheres. I guess I just panicked (for lack of a better term) when this news was breaking out yesterday. I knew I couldn’t trust the media and their spin, and thus was frustrated. It’s like being in a desert needing some water! ;-)

I know you guys are doing your best, and I’ll do my part and contribute.

Thanks again to you and all of my fellow FReepers!

I agree with Dorothy, there's no place like home. And FR is "Home".

When someone directed me to FR, I was posting on other boards in the midst of lefties. And these weren't political boards, they were "fan" boards. I frequently got my rear handed to me. I knew what they were saying was wrong but had no info to prove it. I didn't know about news sites and posting links. I learned that here. I learned how to find info and use it. FR has taught Conservatives to fight back with the truth. There's no place like "home".

Jim,

After having slept on it, I have a couple more questions that I think are important.

You are a man of few words and that is fine but it creates tension and frustration in this particular situation.

Do you want us to continue offer you suggestions here on the forums or do you just want us to shut up and wait to see what you do?

For instance, I would suggest that we at least raise funds for a new server. Being at 7/8ths strength is not good. But I don’t know how that fits into your real-life situation there.

Also, maybe you simply don’t ask for enough $$$ from us for research and development and maintenance, or maybe more concrete and ambitious goals could be set for fund raising goals with specific purchases/improvements set out in advance???

I don’t know. What say you?

"It was just a glitch and we will survive

It appears that there is STILL a glitch. I am still not able to access my Private Mail. It will show up red showing I have mail and I click on it and see who the mail is from, but when I click to read the mail it is ALL BLANK. I thought maybe I could fix this by going to Preferences but same there. When I click on it the window comes up BLANK.

HELP! Is there something I need to do or is it still a glitch with FreeRepublic?

I agree!!!

“””Thank you Jim and John for the clean design and tight code that underpins FR. Today, just as it was on 9/11 (long before I joined), this remains my primary source for breaking news and factual, no-nonsense information.

The lack of banner ads, Flash, JavaScript and graphics are what I’ve always found appealing. Today, when things did get a tad sluggish, all I did on my end was fire up the venerable Lynx character-based text browser. Voila! FR was again fast and responsive. John’s backend scripts and the HTML are all solid and standards compliant.

Please keep the design straightforward and dismiss the ideas of those who want useless eye candy and a radical departure from the time-tested, proven look and feel.”””

When I say it, it means it’s just me saying what I’m thinking... maybe something that hasn’t been proven but looks suspicious. And it doesn’t really apply to anyone else’s thoughts.

I believe that's how most people take it.

I check Jim's posting history

I remember how long it took me to do this, and don't remember reading anywhere how to do it. Basically:

  1. Each post has the poster's name bolded at the bottom of their post. Click on their name.
  2. This will get you to their personal page (although it may be blank if they haven't populated it)
  3. At the top, click the InForum tab. You will get a list of each post that the poster has made, in whatever thread, and in chronological order - last post first
I hope this helps.

Golly I’m sorry! I should have thought of telling posters how to do it. Glad you did!

This may exist — I haven’t checked for awhile — but a manual for n00bs, a group of FAQs, someplace to go to learn about the various features of the board, would be handy.

Thanks to both of you.

Jim, your added info is a GREAT HELP.

Many folks just get exceedingly anxious, if not flakey, without more information of the kind your post provided.

It helps greatly to know what & where the boundaries are.

I had guessed pretty closely but guessing is just guessing.

John's aweseome work is without peer on the net. That says a LOT. You obviously trained him well.

It would be nice for you the win the mega millions lottery and see what you could play with. Lots of things would be nice--or so we think.

Nevertheless, day in and day out; year in and year out; John and you and the donors pull of amazing things to stick hot pokers in the eyes of evil in behalf of our beloved Republic and good around the world.

May God bless your efforts and reward you abundantly in His ways and His time.

Thanks beyond measure.

Just had a major overhaul software wise. And, they went commercial with ads a year or 3 ago. They have lots of bells and whistles. They do alternative news tolerably with a fierce British civility mindset.

It’s a tolerable place to find alternative news if one can stomach the mostly liberal mind-set of most of the participants and a good many mods.

That said—FR IS SEVERAL THOUSAND% BETTER IN A LONG LIST OF WAYS.

And part of that better is the clean text focus and the lack of ads.

I could tolerate ads—particularly if there were ways to earn a less ads status. On ATS, if one has earned 250 stars and 250 flags from posting excellance by reader responses in giving such stars and flats, one has no ads.

HOWEVER, I MUCH PREFER YOUR WAY WITH FR.

Would super redundant hardware and software with a high degree of fault tolerance be worth ads?

MAYBE.

IF it also made John’s job EASIER and more efficient, sure.

IF NOT—it might be a toss up.

Throw in the copyright hassles, I think your way is much wiser.

Much agree.

i missed your condescension originally......
