Dear Free Republic - are you under attack?

The site is REALLY slow. There seem to be issues that have been ongoing. I know you're in a Freepathon, but in the LAST Freepathon, I gave you quite a bit of a donation. Why? Because I like the site and I thought I ought to contribute.

This slowness is really frustrating. What's the problem?

It’s only money. Don’t sweat the small stuff.

Your contribution efficiency on Free Republic is trivial compared to the taxes paid efficiency when say money given to the NEA for piss jar sculpture

Haven't had any problems lately here on the other side of the world.

But then again, I'm asleep during peak-time on FR.

Oh I know! I spent quit a few times mortified from a mistake. And there weren’t hundreds of thousands of members then so everyone knew who the culprit was that did it. LOL

I'm shocked at the number of clueless posters on FR.

Post 97 and Post 136

Throw in attacks by the left and you've got FR limping along and dragging complainers with it.

My comments go well beyond this single event. There have been ongoing issues with the site’s response time, even when everything is “working right”, combined with fairly frequent major issues/outages. Also, did you read and comprehend my comments on the no-longer-accessible threads? Jim ought to be able to take some constructive criticism and identification of problem areas. Get a clue yourself.

So do the responses.

Also, did you read and comprehend my comments on the no-longer-accessible threads?

Yes. This site has suffered attacks and damage because of it. Try reading.

Jim ought to be able to take some constructive criticism and identification of problem areas. Get a clue yourself.

If you're unhappy with FR start your own site and quit whining. Your comments very clearly say that you did NOT read posts by the experts. Or you didn't understand them. You use Jim's site then complain it doesn't run the way you THINK it should. That's crass.

Yes, Sir! FR has boatloads of information flowing like a giant river.

Thanks a bunch! You have a great weekend, too.

Darling, you’re clearly in over your head on the technical aspects of this. Don’t try to tell me to just “leave it to the experts”. In a previous job, I had 25-30 infrastructure engineer types working for me, including CCIEs on the network side, DBAs, and server engineers/admins. This stuff is complex but it is done effectively in lots of places. If Jim needs additional resources, let’s get that out on the table. Heck, there are probably several here who could and would help pro-bono. I know one FReeper who is a high-level system security consultant for a major corporation whose name you would recognize, who would probably be amenable to helping out.

Putting down problem identification as “whining” is not helping the problem, and neither is sticking your head in the sand and pretending it doesn’t exist. That’s what Democrats do.

And you still don't get it.....that alone tells me that you read nothing.

Have a nice day.

I agree. I jumped into the thread in the wrong place. I'm leaving now, but I do think that these issues are very serious and impact the current credibility of the site. And Jim probably knows this already, too.

Combine the instability of the site with the childish way we treated Congressman Duncan Hunter the other day and I weep for the reputation of today's Free Republic.

IMHO Jim's tremendous leadership is needed right NOW. We are entering an extremely crucial two year period. We need to get our act together now.

Oh I don't think so. Most Freepers are concerned with the constant DOS attacks and the continued health of FR. It's just that some are hyper-critical. I can't imagine the headache of trying to fix a site while it's running and fending off attacks at the same time. I think the Robinson's get a lot of criticism and very few "Atta boy's".

Precisely. Yet if you point out these issues, some insist there is nothing major wrong, and that you are just whining, clueless, and should sit down and shut up. Or at least that is what some are telling me on this thread.

Falling in lockstep when things are wrong isn’t what conservatives do. Always manage into the problem, don’t run from it, I say.

Oh, I hate to hear that.

He's a good conservative and was decent enough to come on to FR and converse with FReepers and some treated him badly?

I agree...we're supposed to be better than that.

I'm a relative n00b, only since 2008, but the way Congressman Hunter was treated the other day was the most embarrassing thing I've ever even heard of on a conservative site. He was treated like a pawn in a private childish conservative-bashing battle and not treated at all according to his earned stature as a good, solid Conservative leader. I was ashamed to be part of it.

As for Congressman Hunter, he bowed out pretty early. He showed class. I doubt he'll show up again and I doubt others will want to try again unless Jim himself hosts it.

We FReepers OURSELVES are responsible for the reputation of this site and the face we put forward to the public and the ONE MILLION PAGE HITS PER DAY we generate.

My suggestion is that, while we like to have fun, it should still be decent and professional ESPECIALLY when we have guests the stature of an active Conservative leader like Duncan Hunter. Don't we want more access to actual players like him? I think we do.

We won't get them with rickety technology and shockingly poor behavior.

I love and support FR. But surely we must keep our house in order, too. Adults must take care that things are kept in shape around here so that we can continue to have fun, be informed and have a continuing powerful influence on this Republic of ours.

With that in mind, perhaps you shouldn't be lecturing me.

I don't cotton to that sort of thing at all.

I happen to be a productive adult.
