Wife totalled car; Considering many models; Recommendations?
Me

Posted on 12/31/2010 12:04:58 PM PST by RangerM

Found out yesterday that wife totalled car. Long story short, looks like I'm buying a car soon. She'll want another SUV, but I'm thinking CUV. Looking at....

Ford Escape/Mazda Tribute Hyundai Tuscon Kia Sportage Mitsubishi Outlander Honda CR-V (a bit pricey) Mazda5 (not a CUV, but I'm including it as a wildcard)

I've read a lot of info online, but am hoping to hear from anyone with personal experience and thoughts. I'm going shopping with my wife, when I get back in town.

(NOTE: I refuse to consider RAV4 because my last Toyota was a disappointment, or anything GM/Chrysler)

Honda CRV - best vehicle I’ve ever owned.

I have over 215,000 miles on it and it goes wherever I ask it to.

Just change the timing belt every 80,000 miles or so and it just keeps on going.

Me also. The wife drives my old one (317k miles) and I drive a 2008.

I won’t even consider anything else.

I’ve owned a Hyundai Accent for the past 3 years and love it. GREAT (speed) pickup. I need to start saving up for another one.

Just bought a Mercury Marquis LS Ultimate 2003 v8 leather interior for $2010.99. It was a repo at our local credit union. Great buy. Had all fluids changed, brakes checked and professionally cleaned. Add $600. Still a great buy. There are many repos for sale. The CU admitted to taking a loss. This car was a voluntary surrender. Owner delivered and said he lost his job and couldn’t make payments.

CRVs are small on the inside. If you want a honda but are taller or need to haul stuff a Pilot (or even their minivan) gives you a lot more room and space to haul stuff.

She’s fine, thanks for asking. We haven’t had any accidents in a long time (12 yrs for her, about 19 years for me)

She likes the higher seating position that an SUV has, but (for us) the cost of a Jeep GC would be a bit out of reach. Looking to spend $25K or less.

“Those two models don’t get speeding tickets either.”

I dunno. They look pretty fast to me...: ))

I thought a timing belt can be replaced with a new one.

I like the Ford Escape (2001-2007). The Xterra would be my close second to that.

My wife leased a Rav4 Limited 4cyl 4 wd. She works close to home so over milage is not a concern she loves it and Toyota lease was very reasonable.

$25K or less, I think a lot of people’s suggestions of a Toyota may be best. Also look for a used Volvo. A couple of years will make a big difference in price. I just looked in a local auto site and a 2008 XC90 was under 25K. Going used should allow you to jump up in types while keeping to the budget. We always have purchased used even when we had cash payments for a new.

My vehicle is a ‘96 Explorer V8 AWD with 212,000 miles, it’s a little rusty, but very trusty and the best winter vehicle I’ve ever owned.

You have an older one it sounds, the newer ones are smaller than the past models. They’ve swtiched it from a small SUV to a crossover. Can’t stand my BOL’s one. He’s now complaining it’s too small.

I love my BMW 3-series. I realize it’s a compact car & not a CUV but it’s AWD, small, easily maneuverable, & drives like a dream. I’m on my 2nd one & wouldn’t trade it for anything.

If your wife totalled this last car and she came through it OK, you should go out and get the same exact car again. Based on your wife’s test program, its safety is proven!
