Coyotes in the Neighborhood?
N/A ^ | December 12, 2010 | Doc91678

Has anyone heard of coyote attacks on pet dogs in the area of Broome and Tioga Counties, New York State? Seems coyote activity has increased in this area. Anyone having the same problems?

I use an AR in 223. But we often shoot them at 500 yards.

I use one too... but I really like what my 7.62 in AR platform does to them... ends the argument yesterday.

We have major problems here in GA. They are everywhere. We have had a couple of confrontations in our neighborhood with them while walking the dogs.

I live in west Tennessee and my place is in the backwoods. Coyote baying is one of the most familiar sounds out here. Well, that and gun shots.

Well, the coyotes are going to have to eat a few more beans before they will be able to kill and eat Dixie and Dubbers. I don’t want to live out here after Dub gets a few more years on her. Dixie is going on 12, but is still fit, big and muscular. They’ve had to deal with the rattlesnakes out here; Dub is a snake dog (has the big “dew claws” as my mother used to call them and said dogs with dew claws were good snake dogs. - The cat, Stuffy, depends on Dixie and Dub to protect her, but she is actually pretty mean and I call her the “Slasher”.

Yup, we like killing them but do not want them to suffer needlessly.

Thanks folks,
Last night we had a dog killed by coyotes just a few hundred yards from my home.
My neighbor's Samoyed was killed by coyotes.
Dec 31st at 2:30 I heard the coyotes yipping up on the ridge. Seems they also chased down a deer.
January 1st, we're forming up to go cull them from the area. Turkey Hill is going to by popping.
BTW, I also heard wolves howling yesterday morning.
My 243 is going to be taking a few.

I've hunted coyotes before.
They yip a high whine not like a wolf howl.
This passed Spring we killed 43 in 5 mile radius.
The largest buck coyote I've seen weighed nearly 75lbs. I always thought they were smaller but up here it seems not to be the case.

And to answer your original question, I’m not too far off from Owego,... in Sussex, Passaic, and Morris county in NJ, and Orange and Rockland county in NY I’ve seen coyotes and coydogs for as long as I can remember.

15 years ago we still had a native red fox population, and they were seen often by locals. I haven’t seen a red fox in 6 years and I’ve hiked over 1000 miles in the area. Coyotes wiped out the fox population...

I’m in Bucks County, PA and one night I caught a coyote out front stalking my cat. I chased that thing into the woods until I couldn’t fight my way through the brush anymore. What that coyote didn’t know was that my very strong, big fat, fully-clawed cat would have taken his eyeballs out.

I do see coyotes cutting across my backyard from time to time, but they are real shy about getting near humans around here.

I agree... I want them dead before they hear the report... now Armadillos... that is a different story. I am convinced they are straight from hell.

coyotes now inhabit the entire North American continent

They are but I wouldn't necessarily blame them on the wackos tho. They've pretty much been fair game for hunters everywhere they can be shot. Unfortunately they've infiltrated suburban, high population areas such as where I live and they can't be safely shot at.....

In fact, about 40 miles north of me in a more rural area a lady had a rifle bullet come thru the side of her house during bow season. It was pretty obvious that someone was attempting to poach a deer but the scary part is that the guy used an illegal high power rifle rather than a legal shotgun with slugs......What I mean by illegal is that in the souther half of Michigan you can only use shotguns with slugs to hunt deer due to the limited range of the slugs. It's a safety thing

lol...Armadillos is a problem we do not have in the high desert. I did live in TX in the 70’s though so I am sympathetic.

Totally kidding?

No. We just moved here from Texas where we had coyotes EVERYWHERE. Shot a few of 'em while hunting tho rare to see them in daylight. Hearing a pack tune up at sunset is scary to first time listeners.

And no, it was NOT obvious that they are all the way up here in the frozen wastes of the far north...always thought of them as desert types.
