Wikileaks cable reveals U.S. conspired to retaliate against European nations if they resisted GMOs
Natural news ^ | December 24, 2010 | Mike Adams

Wikileaks continues to rock the political world by shedding light on conspiracies, corruption and cover-ups. The latest batch of diplomatic cables released by Wikileaks reveals what can only be characterized as a U.S.-led conspiracy to force GMOs onto European countries by making those countries pay a steep price if they resist.

The cable reveals the words of Craig Stapleton, the US ambassador to France, who was pushing the commercial interests of the biotech industry by attempting to force GMOs into France. In his own words (below), he expresses his frustration with the idea that France might pass environmental laws that would hamper the expansion of GMOs:

“Europe is moving backwards not forwards on this issue with France playing a leading role, along with Austria, Italy and even the [European] Commission… Moving to retaliation will make clear that the current path has real costs to EU interests and could help strengthen European pro-biotech voice.”

Got that so far? His own words: “Retaliation” as a way to “make [it] clear” that resisting GMOs will have a price.

Stapleton goes on to say something rather incredible:

“Country team Paris recommends that we calibrate a target retaliation list that causes some pain across the EU since this is a collective responsibility, but that also focuses in part on the worst culprits. The list should be measured rather than vicious and must be sustainable over the long term, since we should not expect an early victory…”

As you read these words again, remember that these are the words of the U.S. ambassador to France who is suggesting the US “calibrate a target retaliation list” in order to “cause some pain across the EU” that must be “sustainable over the long term.”

Monsanto has too much power.

interesting article.

A Month Without Monsanto

I began to research where exactly Monsanto corn appeared in my family’s diet. With a little online sleuthing, I learned that in addition to producing the genetically modified corn, Monsanto produces several other genetically modified crops such as soy, sugar beets, and cotton. Many of these crops form the foundation of our diets: 70 to 80 percent of American processed foods contain genetically engineered ingredients, according to the Grocery Manufacturers of America. A large percentage of the cotton in our clothes and homes begins in Monsanto's labs.

... Probing a little deeper, I was surprised to learn that a company specializing in genetically modified plant crops also had an enormous influence on America’s meat industry. Sixty percent of genetically modified corn goes to feed America’s beef cattle. Additionally, Monsanto’s recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) is used to increase milk production in many dairy cows.

...By day two of my attempt to remove Monsanto from my life, I realized I was in way over my head. For the past 10 years Monsanto has bought up seed companies around the globe. They now own a majority of the seed lines in America, including a large percentage of organic seeds. ...

” If you plant a non Monsanto crop and some of your crop gets contaminated w/ pollen from your neighbors GMO crop and you try to save or resell your seeds, Monsanto will come down on you like a ton of bricks and sue you for “copyright infringement” and take you to the cleaners. “

That’s interesting. Can you point me to some examples for further reading?

Here are a few articles about what "pollen contamination" is. More GMO Corn Increasing Risk of Contamination

Managing "Pollen Drift" to Minimize Contamination of Non-GMO Corn

Minimizing Pollen Drift & Commingling of GMO and non-GMO Corn Grain

Information on contamination of Hawai'i Island papaya by genetically engineered varieties

Here are a examples of Monsanto suing farmers for planting cross contaminated seed. They actually sue farmers who plant heirloom or organic plants that have been unknowingly contaminated by GMO pollen. When the farmer save their seed and plant them the next year, Monsanto sues them for "patent infringement".

State government tests confirm GM contamination--This farmer's organic farm tested 70% positive for GMO and his organic certification is in the process of being taken away from him. Monsanto has said they will pay the defense fees of the farmer that contaminated Marsh's farm if Marsh decides to sue them for contaminating his organic field w/ their GMO.

Since the US Supreme Court ruled in Monsanto’s favor when it came to GMO seed patents and all the supporting court cases against farmers’ crops, there should be no surprise with the direction we are headed on a worldwide basis concerning food sources.

Monsanto has it down to one seed produces one plant and unable to reproduce again...the offspring seeds are sterile.

Glad to see this post is still alive. Again, try watching the documentary ‘Future of Food (2004)’ for a basic understanding of GMO, scientific, political and otherwise.

Thanks I will. -- Just from quick searches on this topic it is disturbing how involved the Government is with promoting Monsanto. Bushed pushed this hard and it continues with Obama.

You have to go to the very end to find two references to GMO’s. This is odd because to effectively communicate with another person, the have to be on the same page. English bored me but even I know you spell is out before you abbreviate.

The US Biotec firms got a head start on the world in the late 80s, early 90's; and the entire time the nations of Europe screamed about Genetically Modified Foods (GMF) being a danger to your health, to your family line, the environment, etc. Then in the late 90's the European Farm Co-ops (read Governments) got their hands into the GMF production and now you do not hear a wimper from them the new EU about GMF since they feed it their own people. The entire issue about trade is that every nation wants to be a player in every industry (for instance take Airbus - fully Govt backed and always subsusdized).

So backing an American business interest instead of some other country's industry is not in our Interest - smakes of the same type thinking that allows the Dem's to pass of their socialism for economic planning.

If there's really no danger, no issue w/ them, they shouldn't be fighting against having them labeled as such. What is monsanto and all these other pro-GMO food producers afraid of? They're afraid that if we actually knew how much GMO was in our food, we would boycot them.

Just because Monstanto is an Amercian business doesn't mean I am going to be their cheerleader. If they are making a bad product and using nefarious strong arm tactics against innocent farmers, producers and customers to force a monopoly on our food and seed supply, I want to be their worst nightmare.

As a kid that grew up around farms, did farm labor and attended a rural Farming oriented High School, I am in support of GMFs. Dekalb was a leader for years, their GMF was literally cross breeding different seeds, year after year to get a variety with higher yields, stronger against weeds, insects, needing less water or fertilizer.

As for trees with grafted branches, or hogs that are breed with one sal know for quick growing and a bore that produces less fat in off spring. All these GMFs have one thing in common, finding the fittest and best qualities in each and then trying to improve with a better offspring.

Maybe the GMFs that people are afraid are the ones that have tiny drops of liquids or cells grafted into the hosts?

Again, the US Manufacturers have been investing for over 25-years and the rest of the world for about 10-12 years - it is a business and each country tries to protect their own industry.

As for labeling GMFs, is there anything in the world that doesn't qualify - carrots, potatoes, corn, beans, Rice especially, animals and the milks and cheeses - they are all byproducts of selective breeding.

Again to sum it all up, farming is a science. Whether rotating crops, selection of a grain or feed for animals, plant food, weeding, tilling, watering, and especially knowing how to manage the books of the business are all part of the modificaiton of foods.

To equate GMO with selective breeding of prized cattle or pigs is lazy logic and argmentation. There are several studies out there that show that GMO potatoes and other foods are not as safe as they want us to believe and consumers should have the right to know what is in their food rather than have it purposefully hidden from them in the name of insane proftis for the Soros-invested Monsanto.

You can find a "study" to support any position.

And amusingly enough, George Soros and the Heinz Foundation is behind the company that spreads all this crap about GMO crops to scare people. Here's one of the folks behind some of the anti-GMO "studies":

1989 : (ALAR SCARE PART OF FENTON COMMUNICATIONS EFFORT TO FUNNEL MONEY TO THE NRDC -- See ECONUTS, LIBERALS/LEFTISTS , FENTON, WWW) One of Fenton's most publicized achievements was his 1989 attack against the producers of Alar, a preservative used in apples that he  erroneously reported as carcinogenic. The misinformation Fenton fed to the news media triggered mass hysteria and caused the apple industry to lose over $200 million in revenue. Later, in a memo uncovered by the Wall Street Journal, Fenton bragged, "We designed [the campaign against Alar] so that revenue would flow back to the Natural Resources Defense Council from the public." The Natural Resources Defense Council was another of Fenton's primary clients.  --------This profile [of David Fenton] was adapted from the article titled "Peaceful Tomorrows, Leftists Todays," written by Thomas Ryan and published by FrontPageMagazine.com on March 17, 2004.

DECEMBER 2002 : (WWW PRESS CONFERENCE —See DAVID FENTON, MOVEON.ORG, ) * David Fenton & Fenton Communications, The Heinz Family Foundation, the aforementioned Open Society Institute and Moveon.org :
Win Without War first burst onto the political scene in December 2002, at an international press conference featuring leftist actor Mike Farrell. Although the organization was initiated with a letter signed by over 100 celebrities calling for an end to America’s “imperialist” wars, with the help of David Fenton, the founder of the public relations firm, Fenton Communications, and the rabidly anti-Bush Internet outfit, Moveon.org, the campaign was presented as a non-partisan patchwork of American life. But while Fenton may want Americans to see Win Without War as being “middle of the road,” the sum of its parts paints a vastly different picture.
Fenton Communications is a “socially responsible” PR firm with a penchant for backing Marxist regimes, and Win Without War boasts a number of “progressive” operatives, like the coalition’s director, Tom Andrews, and Clinton employee, Maggie Williams, who use non-profits to front for the Democratic Party line. ....————— “America’s Red Army,” Frontpage Magazine.com ^ | 9/1/04 | Jennifer Verner

But, of course, so many geniuses here are applauding the continuation of the FedGov picking winners and losers and ramming products down our and everyone else’s throats for campaign contributions.
