Chris Kluwe often likes to have fun on his Twitter page but after Vikings players got a look at the field conditions at TCF Bank Stadium on Sunday during their walk-through the punter turned very serious in a series of posts. Kluwe termed the field that is scheduled to play host to Monday night's game against the Bears as "unplayable."
Here are Kluwe's tweets regarding a field that has no heating coils in it:
"Serious time - All respect to the people that cleared the field and got it ready, you did an amazing job. That being said, it's unplayable. The field is as hard as concrete an hour and a half after they took the tarp off, and anyone that hits their head is getting a concussion. I find it interesting that the NFL can claim an emphasis on player safety, and then tell us the field is fine. It's beyond hypocritical. I can only hope, however unlikely, that no one gets catastrophically injured at the trainwreck that's about to take place tomorrow night."

I know a thing or two about sports turf as you might infer. I am at a loss as to why this would be a concern. Aren’t artificial turf fields built on a surface of concrete or asphalt? Sure, there’s a layer of rubber crumbs but its certainly not like landing on the soft air filled surface of a Moon Bounce.
It’s winter. It’s Minneapolis. It’s cold. The field is frozen. It’s football. It’s not like you have a real job - you’ll only be there for three hours and will be paid more than an average workingman’s annual salary for the day of cold and snow.

Sorry for the repeat post on these types of threads. Here’ a short video from the 1969 Vikings season talking about playing in the cold. (Bud Grant, no heaters, etc.)
I imagine the fields back then were just as hard as today.

They have 24 hours. Why not try to do some heavy thawing. Blow torches, maybe? Zygi can afford it.
I sure don’t remember such complaining from players back in the old days about cold weather and field conditions.
Well, if somebody decides this field doesn’t meet NFL standards, then what? The game takes place tomorrow.
They’ve had a tarp over the field for a couple of days with hot air being blown underneath it.
Actually, the latest forecast is for 8 inches of snow, so it seems to me that would pretty much cushion anyone’s fall to the ground. Even the pansy-assed punter’s.
As an addendum to my prior post, if they want to play indoors then Parchesi is the game for them...........

no they didn’t. Unlike most fields in the midwest (Soldier Field, Lambeau, etc.) they’re are no heating coils under the University of Minn. field. They’re trying to lay coils on top of the field and then put a tarp over that...doesn’t appear to be working so well.
Nope. No coils under the turf. It’s a college stadium. They saw no need.
Remember when the Packers would stand along the sidelines and laugh at the opponants ? All the time refusing to wear cloaks,capes, or jackets.

The Vikings used to do the same thing. Only, Bud Grant was the coach, then...
