2001 is completely absorbing from start to finish. It’s as much a piece of music as a narrative film. The visuals are so integrated into an artistic vision that they are impossible to trivialize.

How long does something have to be around till its a classic? 2001 is one of the most revered films ever made and its been endlessly imitated.

Dude! Who knew you were a Serenity fan? Me too. It's a shame it wasn't the hit it deserved to be.

There are quite a few "Browncoats" right here on FR!

BTW, did you catch Monday night's episode of Castle? The title character (Rick Castle, played by Nathan Fillion) spoke some Chinese, and when the detective asked if he had learned Chinese during a semester abroad? He replied "a TV show he used to love!"

Was “I Robot” really worth watching? I never bothered as I couldn’t see how the short stories I’d read matched up with the trailers I saw. I was kinda bummed because I wanted to see a Caves of Steel movie with the awesome rolling roads.

The title & the 3 laws were about the only things shared with Asimov's book of short stories.

It's a really fun movie as long as you don't get hung up on expecting anything directly from Asimov's writing.

If Hollywood MUST keep on remaking movies, I would love to see a decent remake of Starship Troopers that actually followed the book.

I was so infuriated about the movie that halfway through I wanted to kick a hole in the screen. The lack of powered armor was the worst sin, but not the only one.

Thanks, but I did catch my error later on. How I kept on missing it at first, well, I must have gotten the bleary eye...

Starship Troopers (the book) was far too preachy (as most of Heinleins later works are). I happen to agree with a lot (not all) of his opinions, but I don't like having them shoved down my throat. Characters and situations in books should service a story, not be platforms for this beliefs.

The movie was AWFUL. OK, I modify that. The special effects were very good (especially the outer space scenes) and the actual action was exciting enough, but it wasn't what Heinlein envisaged. Not even remotely. And it mocked his political opinions, which is a horrible thing to do.

Star Wars is “Hidden Fortress” set in space. As I understand it, it was inspired directly by this mostly unknown film.

That reminds me of “The Sphere”, which was a pretty good book and an OK movie adaptation, which I think needed some nudity. :-)

Ewwww! You want to see Dustin Hoffman nekkid?

I did not realize that Cowboy BeBop was a movie. I found the anime series fascinating.

Another good movie that I just thought of was "The Island," with Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson. Both Sci-Fi and a terrific action movie. And speaking of Michael Bay, how about "Transformers" & "Transformers 2?" That's actually a question, since I haven't seen either of them, but they DO have Megan Fox, so even if they're terrible, there is one redeeming factor in the movie.

Did you ever watch the movie “The Labyrinth”? That was kind of a science fiction, and I believe it had muppets. Along with David Bowie.

I think I'd call it "fantasy" rather than sci-fi. But I really loved it. And it makes a great weekend double feature with another muppet based fantasy movie, "The Dark Crystal."

WTF is “Starship Troopers” doing on there?

Or “They Live”?

Or “Robinson Crusoe” on Mars.

And where’s “Devil Girl From Mars”?

And “Earth Girls Are Easy?”

“Klatu Verati Nicktu” - and that’s all I’m gonna say about it!

Very important words, just be sure you say them correctly! Otherwise, you'll unleash the demons again!

Cowboy Bebop the Movie was pulled from mass distribution because of it’s terrorist plot and several scenes with the World Trade Center(on Mars no less). It was later released in a limited run.

I consider it equal to Ghost in the Shell (another Sci Fi Anime movie that should be on the list).

When I first saw Star Wars, you didn't have to wait long for the action to start. That first scene was so cool. That star destroyer seemed to go on for ever.

Seeing Star Wars when it was first released (I wasn't able to see it until the 3rd week it was out, because it was so hard to get in to see it) was a revelation. Watching it in a really BIG theater, on a really BIG screen, I have never seen anything like the opening scene, and it set the tone for the entire movie. Looking at it today, it's really no big deal, but in the scope of visual effects, I'd put it on the same scale as 2001, as things nobody had ever seen before!
