Job loss inspired Oak Brook Libertarian to run for Senate

Mike Labno didn't have to read the stock tables to feel disgust over the government's economic approach.

Two years ago, Labno lost his job in construction around the same time lawmakers were approving a bailout for banks. The outrage Labno feltstarted him down the path to becoming the Libertarian Party's candidate for U.S. Senate.

Labno bills himself as the only true conservative in the race and frequently casts digs at Republican nominee Mark Kirk, so much so that Democrat Alexi Giannoulias has actively boosted Labno's candidacy.

Labno, a first-time political candidate from Oak Brook, said the bailout convinced him that both parties were too closely aligned with corporate interests. ... "We have a financial disaster on our hands, but you cannot just throw money at it," Labno said. "This is not how our economy becomes strong again, with a response engineered by the government."

Labno, 39, has had to squeeze in campaigning around his full-time job as an electrical contractor, noting that he doesn't have the luxury of the two frontrunners to hold a government post.

Jim Tobin, president of National Taxpayers United of Illinois, said Labno's everyman quality and direct way of addressing the issues has resonated. Speaking to the group, Labno got a standing ovation with a passionate pledge to hold the line on taxes.

"These are hardcore conservative Republicans. When you get a round of applause from these folks, you must be doing something right," said Tobin, who endorsed Labno.

Labno also was the only Senate candidate to get the designation of "fully pro-life" by Illinois Citizens for Life. His anti-abortion stance is at odds with the Libertarians' traditional defense of abortion rights.

Labno also has courted gun owners, even attending a "Shoot with the Senator" event at a Des Plaines gun range (ammunition provided).

The Tea Party fire really was lit in Chicago by Rick Santelli how did Illinois end up with two liberal anti-Tea party candidates running on the major party tickets? Mike Labno deserves the votes of all principled conservatives and Libertarians. Regardless of outcome it is always better to have your enemy in your sights than to have them guarding your back.

AT THIS POINT ANY REAL LIBERTARIAN WOULD THROW HIS SUPPORT TO THE REPUBLCAN TO MAKE SURE DEMOCRAPS ARE DEFEATED

I just voted for Labnoh. I refuse to support a “Republican” running TV ads touting his radical pro-abortion agenda.

The PRIMARIES would have been the place to get rid of that RINO

Right now we need to get rid of democraps and stop obama

I understand your position- but you could just as easily be a democrap shill (because a democrap shill would say the exact same thing)

besides- do you think the democrap candidate is any LESS pro-abortion? And now you just helped him.

And the Democrap will certainly be helped to abort more babies by OTHER Democrap’s if we don’t get rid of them now.

Educate yourself about the candidates before you tell people in other states what to do. In this case, the “Republican” nominee IS a Democrap.

The primary was rigged from the state. Any name candidate who could pose a threat to Kirk was "strongly discouraged" from running. The state party lined up behind Kirk from the moment he announced. Kirk refused to debate his little known primary opponents and the mainstream media & state party spent zillions to falsely portray Kirk was "fiscally conservative and a hawk on defense", and gullible voters who lived outside his congressional district (we have 19 congressional districts in this state so the other 18 districts weren't familiar with Kirk's record) bought the lies hook, line, and sinker. We also had the first primary in the nation, Feb. 2, so there was almost no time to expose this traitor.

Prior to 2008, when we had a fair and open primary process, conservatives would win the U.S. Senate nom You have no idea about the reality of politics in tis state, or situation on the ground here in Illinois and yet you want to tell people here who to vote for.

I live near Chicago. If, when I vote, I think that the race will be close, I’ll vote for Kirk (my congressman), since I don’t want to help split the anti-Democrat vote, helping the Democrat win, with 48%-50% of the vote. If I think that the race won’t be close, I’ll vote for Labno.
