You have done nothing wrong...LOL..I juat put half a cup of sugar and fill a 2 cup measuring cup w water and boil...a little more or less couldn’t hurt..The only thing that hurts is when you don’t keep fresh sugar water 1n the feeder ...I have to change food every 3 days in hot summer..mold will grow...

WHEW!!! Glad to know I haven’t done wrong.

I know - if they don’t finish the feeder in three days, the water gets nasty, and the inside of the glass container starts ‘growing’. LOL

And, mine are very persnickity - they won’t drink it if ONE ant has gotten into the feeder. (The red ants often sneak in, and the hummers always check before they partake. Smart lil birds!)

I find greasing the hanger with vaseline helps with ants..also grease top of feeder as they come down from the tree.
I also get little flying wasplike varmits..Nasty indeed.

OOOO I LOVE butterflies..I went to pick a leaf from under the rim of an outdoor table this week and found out it was a large gray black butterfly! No markings that I could see when it flew away..I was so startled!

The Arizona red ants may not be as big as Texas red ants - but they’re sure smart! They would drop from the tree right onto the feeding part (that has a bee guard on it), missing the top of the feeder, or the glass. (And, I wouldn’t want to put vaseline on the feeding area, for fear of hurting the little birds.)

So, I made a ring around the tree trunk, of boric acid. Well, the ants just avoided the trunk, and climbed up the side of the house to the tree top, and then down to the branch that held the feeder. I don’t know how they know where to go - but they do!

Now that I think about it..I think your proportions are recommended..I alwaays add about the 2 cup line w water so I’ll end up w 2 cups after boiling..so mine is only a bit sweeter.
