Two American tourists, kitted out in glinting helmets and handsome tunics, grapple with each other, swords clanging, as if their very lives depend on it... Just a stone's throw from the Colosseum, on the ancient Appian Way leading from the Eternal City to Brindisi, they boarded the time machine of the Rome Historical Group (GSR) and whiled away an entire afternoon in the Rome of 2,000 years ago... Like the 140 other members of the association of history buffs, Hermes -- who sells real estate during the week -- became a gladiator trainer because of his "passion for Rome. Being Roman doesn't just mean living in Rome but making 'Rome' live," he said. The course can cost up to 100 euros (120 dollars) per person for two hours, but slides down to 25 euros for groups of at least 10. The 2000 Hollywood film "Gladiator" starring Russell Crowe led to a surge in interest in the course.

Your opinion .... is a FAIL. Go study history madam.
Certainly there are things in Roman history that were distasteful...you can say the same thing about American history, yet the ridicule of, and disconnection from our civilization's foundations and history are central to Marxist and Gramscian thought.
Speaking of non-gay things however, the sexy stew — did that actress also play the shrink’s wife in “What About Bob?”
Sure did...Julie Hagerty.;>)
I think her career is over, she does tv now mostly, but in her day she was a cutie...
When I speak of Christianity I’m speaking of true belief in the Lord Jesus. Anyone can say they are Christian or Holy. Those terms are applied loosely and were even then. Just because it was the ‘designated’ religion of Rome or that the Christians were no longer persecuted does not mean it was a ‘holy’ place.
And I do not FAIL in my history dear self professed experts. I did not dispute what you are saying...And yes it can be debated. Similar to whether or not the marxist in the WH, who professes to be a Christian, is or not. Just because it is ‘professed’ does not make it so.
Obviously the point that I was making to Spyktr was lost on all of those that can't wait to show their self perceived brilliance on FR.
My original post was directed at the original article about gladiator skills being taught and those that seem to think it's such fun and what a great idea etc etc. Spyktr responded and I responded back and stand by that post.
I am learning.
Baskethilt claymore!
I dont know how good I am, but it’s great fun and exercise.
At least it must be exercise...I am sore sore and sore again the next day!

That might be a better way to pick politicians!
About?
"Well Im still waiting for your enlightened and elitist view of why you believe I protest too much and exactly what that protest is supposedly about... I want to hear a concise reason for your response. So come on...you felt like a frog and jumped into something and it needs to be finished. Explain yourself in detail instead of utilizing a lib tactic of trying to try & diminish a message you misunderstand with generalities (is this just a method to score points by your fellow FReeps?)....come on Joe 6 pack Lets see your self proclaimed brilliance in action. Put me in my place oh great one."
First, I don't feel any obligation to cast pearls before swine. Since you're so much more "Christian" than the rest of us, I'm sure you understand the admonition against doing so. I do apologize for quoting Shakespeare. You're certainly no "lady." You're also quite ignorant of the importance a civilization's history plays in it's preservation, which is the precise reason marxists like to revise it where they can, and abolish it where they can't.
Learning and preserving the martial history of ancient Greece, ancient Rome, the British Empire, the Confederacy, etc. are fundamental to the understanding of who we are, and how we got here in spite of the unsavory aspects each may have exhibited.
You never responded to my question about doing away with Latin in our legal system...I was waiting on a response to that, but in seeing the way you argue I won't hold my breath.
LOL...ok we’ll have this little skirmish in public. First of all you have an over-active imagination or your reading comprehension skills are below average. How you got to ‘me revising history’ from what I’ve posted shows a severe lack of comprehension on your part. I don’t know what the hell you are talking about. I simply posted that Rome imo was not holy...even when they declared it to be so. What is your problem? And what did you mean I protest too much...protest about what? That was my question .... Revising history? where the hell did you get that? Where did you get that I’m more ‘Christian’? Joe....read and contemplate. I don’t know where you became confused but clearly you truly are.
What are you trying to prove?
At #18, Spktyr advised you that the Roman Empire later adopted a Christian character, and in your reply to him, you assumed the role of the grand adjudicator of what is "Christian" and what is not, and how "Holy" something may actually be, ergo, my assessment that you have appointed yourself as some kind of moral arbiter placing yourself on a rung above the rest of us lowly penitents.
Either you view the Roman Empire through the very narrow prism of an unholy entity that crucified Christ, or you have a very limited ability to communicate what your actual views are. In either case, I questioned the validity of your views on the positive contributions of Rome by asking if the Roman principles at the foundation of our system of jurisprudence should be done away with, and you have yet to respond.
Furthermore, I only pointed out that marxists wish to rewrite history. I never accused you of doing so, and in fact, I don't think you're anywhere near clever enough to do so if you wanted to. You did however, choose to ridicule those that sought to get in touch with, and in a sense preserve part of our (western) history (i.e. the 'gladiator tourists') which can be just as effective as a total rewrite in achieving the ends of a gramscian revolutionary or alinskyite.
And yes spktyr said You are forgetting that it later became the Holy Roman Empire and embraced/preserved Christianity to which I replied that that is debatable. You must be catholic to become so unglued over that response. I wasn't ...how did you put it...'grand adjudicator' or claimed to be. however according to the Bible that I have, simply claiming to be holy or christian means nothing. Now if you have a problem with that, take up with Christ.
Sling some more crap Joe...show the true 'inner, hatefilled, have to be right (over nothing), self. Flame away o superior one.
So...(once again)....
...should we do away with all the Latin concepts in our system of jurisprudence?
Of course not and how you came to believe that that was something I was advocating is beyond me.
I don't think those that teach the gladiator tourists, or those that take the training are calling for the revival of gladiator games, anymore than people who do historical reenactments of Revolutionary War battles are calling for a declaration of war against England.
The Romans were big on role playing as a way to spice up the action. ie: a Retairus (Trident&net) versus the heavily protected Murmillo. The armor was not so much to protect as to prolong the fight. Fights to the death between skilled gladiators was not as common as Hollywood would make you believe. A gladiator was an expensive trained commodity that was not be squandered casually.
The Romans did use criminals, POW’s and various assorted slaves for blood matches. Some Roman citizens even entered training voluntarily. A skilled gladiator was like a rock star of his time.
There were women gladiators altho they were not that common. One of the most famous was Gerardesca Manutius a survivor of the 3rd Servile revolt( Spartacus). She was spared crucifixion by Crassus and sent to the arena. She had over 200 victories over both men and other women gladiators before dying in a match against 2 dwarfs.
