These are real pictures of people who have tattoos and piercings that probably keep them from gainful employment.

33rd wedding ? :)
Thanks all. To bring it back to the thread topic, however, I will sign off with this :
The people pictured here are BAD. On the flip side of the coin, mild body mods, even those that don’t cover up, aren’t the same as what we see here. And certainly, my job performance nor my ability to land a client is affected by -my- choices of body mods. Tattoos or piercings peaking out of appropriate clothing is no reason to send someone packing.
And if HR sent any of them to me for the interview, I would immediately go to the HR department and punch the HR Director in the mouth.
Not sure. Lack of interest precluded my researching it further, but your masochism and endorphin theories sound really reasonable to me. I also suspect you’re right about exhibitionism. It just can’t be that alone, or streaking and street busking would be more popular than painful self-mutilation.
At least with street busking you can turn a profit.
I think that in many cases it's an embrace of tribalism, made fashionable among the uneducated by decades of Leftist indoctrination about how any and all stone-age cultures are so very much more noble and virtuous than American and Western cultures.
In some others it's a matter of them being lifelong social misfits for any of a variety of reasons. Having extreme and visible body 'modifications' simultaneously makes them a part of a social 'tribe' where they FINALLY have SOMETHING in common with others and it also gives them a visible, obvious excuse and a crutch for whatever their real, original failings may be. "People only hate me because of my piercings!". A facade to cover up and mask a boatload of failings underneath; to deflect attention away from who they are. By doing this to themselves they instantly become an 'oppressed' minority and can now rail against anyone or anything who doesn't 'accept them for who they are' as being so terribly 'closed minded', and thus they are placed, in their own minds and those of their peers, on the moral high ground. They feel that it gives them 'street cred', instant acceptance and relevance among a certain group of superficial malcontents. The Left's deification and fullscale support of any and all deviant behaviors encourages the weak and the lost to embrace deviant behaviors and lifestyles instead of making an effort to fit in among well-adjusted people.....there is a massive support network for them.
It also gives people who really have nothing to say something to talk about.
Indeed.
Walking through Hyde Park in London, Hubby and I came across a tiny squirrel sitting on a wrought-iron fence. As we walked by, it took a bow -- one paw on its itty bitty tummy -- and of course we gave it some peanuts. It snagged the loot and started nomming. No fear, man! It's a living.
For the most part, people with tats and piercings are simply desperate for attention.
With all too many of today’s youth, there is a boney-dry-well of talent and ability, so tats and piercings are a way to feel “special”.
If you want to look like a clown, that’s your business but you will NOT represent my business.
(all you millitary vets excluded).
Excellent essay, and if you substitute the description of the members, then it applies to a lot of the leftist “protected groups.”
Take this in the way it is meant and not as a mean spirited post. But what the hell did you do that to yourself for. Do you ever look in the mirror?
One day your kids will look at that and say WTF was worng with him when he did that.
I wish you all the best, Celerity.
My father had hair down to his @$$, and wore nothing but Hawaiian shirts and plaid pants.
Never diminished my opinion of him. I’ll see to it that my kids feel the same.
Rots O’ Ruck.
Thank you so much for your gracious compliment :-)

Indeed that is precisely one of my points. By adopting an 'edgy' outward appearance they instantly align themselves with a subversive subculture that has become so powerful that it is in the process of destroying our entire nation and culture. The ACLU and a flotilla of other shrill, hard-Left activist pressure groups will be far more inclined to rush to the aid of someone with a bone through his nose and dinner plates in his ears who is complaining of discrimination because he wasn't hired as a sales rep for IBM or Amway than someone who looks fairly normal, carries a miniature copy of the Bible in one pocket and the Constitution in another who merely is asking for an equal opportunity. The first individual is working toward the Left's goals whereas the second person is not.
I love the Raiders as much as the next guy, but not that much
Very interesting theory! I think you’ve hit the nail on the head.
The group identity part reminds me of a favorite quote of mine:
“You can’t be a nonconformist if you don’t wear the uniform.”

Anniversary silly boy.
LOL !!!
What can I say. 33 years with the same man you should expect a little brain damage to appear now and then.
My children have damaged me too.
But what if he IS the next guy?
I live in Idaho, thats sort of unlikely.
Now I’m tempted to buy that guy a ticket to Idaho, just to give you an existential crisis. ;^)
