As American Women Fatten, New Beauty Pageants Emerge
The Spearhead ^ | August 3 2010 | Welmer

All American women want to wear a tiara, but those old standards of beauty don’t work for very many of them any longer. In fact, far fewer American women could be objectively called beautiful than a mere 30 years ago, when the fat epidemic had just begun.

Enter the “Miss Plus America” pageant, a competition specifically for “plus” women. Now, American women can eat their way to the championship, scarfing down potato chips and chugging soda pop to put them in the running for beauty queen.

I’m kind of curious as to why “plus” is the term employed. Is it supposed to suggest that it’s somehow desirable, as in “that’s a plus?” Maybe it simply sounds better than “Miss Fat America,” but euphemisms have a way of becoming terms of ridicule, so it will probably backfire soon enough.

Personally, I don’t have a problem with curvy women, naturally big women, etc. But it’s obvious that these women have a great deal of body fat, and are technically obese. Obesity isn’t beautiful, and it isn’t healthy. Our aim should be to eradicate – not celebrate – obesity. However, it seems that these women’s desire to be celebrated matters more than a national crisis that is seeing children develop type II diabetes, and adults die prematurely from weight-related diseases.

The definition of feminine “beauty” has changed several times, throughout history. Today's supermodels would not have been considered beautiful 60 years ago. A couple of hundred years ago, they'd be considered sickly.

As for the male perspective of female “beauty”; the one constant through the ages appears to be the waist-to-hip ratio. And, even that ratio varies by culture (lower in Asia, higher in Latin America).

Looks like Omar the tentmaker had a great season.

I just don't get the celebration of fat these days. Are that many people giving up on being healthy?

Ah well. After obama finishes destroying the economy people will slim down again. These folk may outlive us all. They have far more "fat of the land" to live off of.

Miss Red Gown and Miss White Gown have definite potential ... Miss RG certainly has the motorboat thing going on.

But Miss Purple Gown needs to go on "Biggest Loser". Seriously ... I see lots of cardiovascular problems, pulmonary problems, and diabetes in her future.

Freeper guys often say ‘we like curves’, but we didn’t mean the minkowski curvature of space and time caused by those four ladies standing within five feet of each other.

Men have always liked women to look like women.

The homosexuals and feminists have tried to make it seem otherwise.

I have the same problem with this as I do with ‘traditional’ beauty contests. Neither one promotes a healthy body image for girls/teenagers/young women.
