Martial Arts Expert Fighting for Life After Being Stabbed By Burglars
Daily Record ^ | Jul 24 2010 | Mark Mcgivern

A MARTIAL arts expert was fighting for his life last night after he and his wife were stabbed in their home by intruders.

Johannes Alder, a five-time British champion in sombo wrestling, confronted two teenage burglars after they attacked his wife Liz, 38.

But, still half asleep, the brave 37-year-old was stabbed in the head and body before the thugs fled.

Medics at first listed him as critical, fearing he would die from his serious wounds. Liz also underwent surgery for a slashed wrist. Both were in a "serious but stable" condition last night. Blood could be seen on the door of the couple's home yesterday. Police branded the attack "appalling". Apprehend It is understood Johannes and Liz were asleep in their home in Saucelhill Terrace, Paisley, when the burglars struck. It is believed the teenage thieves were loading valuables from homes into a car parked nearby. Liz heard noises and went downstairs, catching them in the act. Johannes then tried to apprehend one of the youths before both turned their knives on him.

Neighbour William McGuire said: "We could hear shouting. I heard Liz shouting, 'Phone the police, phone the police'.

"She sounded frantic, really terrified, and I suspected that there were intruders in the house."

William, 61, added: "They are lovely neighbours. I know Johannes is into martial arts, but he would never be aggressive. He is a very decent, quiet guy." Johannes is an expert in sombo wrestling, a Russian martial art, which merges judo, ju-jitsu, karate and east European wrestling. He has an IT degree and worked for the police before moving to another job. He was recently made redundant. Liz runs a business with her sister Angela, selling children's clothes. The couple married in 2008. Police said the attack happened in the middle of a spree of thefts in the area.

Superintendent Niven Rennie said: "This is an appalling attack on a couple within their own home. Clearly, our thoughts are with them at this time. I would appeal for anyone who has information to contact us."

Police said the suspects were between 17 and 19. One was 5ft 10in, with short, blond spiky hair.

The second was of similar build and both wore dark clothing.

What's the point of being a martial arts expert if you can't defend yourself?

Never take a foot to a knife fight.

I think this is one thing broccoli won’t help with. Maybe spinach.

Yet another good argument for keeping firearms in the home. Even if you’re extremely fit and well trained you can still lose. That is especially true when outnumbered.

He was sparring in a tournament. They were playing for keeps. In situation where the other side is armed, you pretty much have to try to kill the opposition, not subdue them.

I’m not really knowledgeable, but I have heard that many martial arts academies just teach sparring and kata work. There is a risk that some of this will be detrimental to true self defense.

Open and easy access to knives is the problem. We need good knife control laws. Knives should not be readily available.

My suspicion is that guys who spar for points in amateur tournaments don't have the killer instincts of street brawlers. In an amateur tournament (excluding MMA), hurting the other guy means you lose points, and risk being banned for life from the sport. In a street brawl, not hurting the other guy means he might end up hurting you. In a tournament, you hold the other guy down. In a street fight with armed, multiple opponents, you put him down and kick him until he's no longer moving. It ain't pretty to look at, but then again, real fighting isn't actually about pageantry or medals either.

And if he had had a firearm, or even if he had managed to find any other weapon and disarm the buglars, he would have probably been arrested and charged with interefering with a criminal at his work.

Britain may someday regain its greatness, but right now it is a topsy-turvy bizarro land where sanity is outlawed and lunatics write the rules.

Sadly, I think you are right. I think the best schools out there are the ones that teach "mixed" martial arts; i.e., elements of Karate,Kung Fu, western style boxing, judo, weapons training, and old fashioned street fighting.

I was trained in several schools of Chinese arts, but I think the "mixed" approach makes the most sense...

Outside of MMA and boxing, martial arts tournaments involve pulling punches. Even in MMA and boxing, the rules do not permit fighters to hit their opponents until they're no longer moving. Outside of MMA and boxing, tournaments involve pulling a series of slick moves and waiting for the referee to add up the points scored. In real life, you fight until all of your opponents are no longer threats. (He had the option of not fighting them in the first place, but having chosen to confront them, he needed every move to be a lethal strike).

That is what many in the U.K. are pushing for. After they ban knives, what will they try to ban next?

‘Phone the police, phone the police’.

When seconds count, the police are only minutes away. RKBA is the only way

There is a episode of COPS Fort Worth (Texas y'all) where a multiple black belt martial arts instructor was mugged while taking the trash out from his shop.

The actors came from behind the dumpster and hit him over the head with a brick. He went into auto mode and put the two in the hospital in near fatal condition.

The cops were making fun of the actors for attacking a guy who was wearing his black belt.

I don’t see why they don’t just ban murder and assault. That would make more sense to me.

I spent quite a while training in a martial art. The express purpose of this art was how to kill as quickly and effectively as possible with a knife. Sparring was with magic markers. Even a “practice” knife was too dangerous.

We also trained with spikes aka steel pens or even pencils. Or long nails.

They’ll have to ban those next. After all, with computers, who needs to write? And nails can be licensed to builders. So those are next. Only half kidding, sadly.

Had a buddy who was proficient with a staff. His preferred street weapon, which he used to good effect when three thugs tried to jump him? A high quality umbrella. Those will be next after pens, pencils, and nails.
