But but but OSX is really Unix so this can't be. /sarcasm
tech ping pls.
I thought you’d find this article interesting.
Oh my God where do I get the protection software I need? I will pay anything to stay safe.
On second thought...Never mind.
Golly, so all those millions of people infected who where running windows were just mistaken? Time to uninstall their adblockers, scanners, antivirus, and live free and secure...
Of course, all those Mac users only THINK they haven’t gotten in viruses, when in fact they are loaded with them and didn’t even know it all this time !!
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA !!
This one is funny.
Was it written for people who have never USED a Mac or PC?
Cause my guess is... there might be a few people with the personal experience to just shake their heads at THIS whopper of a tall tail.
Windows is more secure then OS X.... and if my grandma had wheels she’d be a wagon !!
I think what gets overlooked most of the time is that the reason Windows has been so targeted for years is because it is the most common OS being used. Of course hackers are going to target the system used by most of the public and businesses. As a side note, this has given Microsoft years of experience fixing and improving their security. Now that Macs are becoming more ‘common’ in the market place, they are getting more ‘attention’ from hackers, which is beginning to expose the security flaws in their software.
Uh oh. Guess I better run out and buy McAfee Total Protection 2010 and Norton Antivirus 360 for my Macbook! Wait. I can’t find them for Apple products. What is going on here?
What a load. Experience tells otherwise.
When simply counting numbers, it makes no distinction between "wide open, gaping hole that lets a remote user take over your entire machine" and "may be able to read private data if the attacker has already gained access to the machine". But those are radically different security threats.
Oh, and this is a laugher, too:
The primary vulnerabilities on PCs are not due to Microsoft programs, but rather third-party programsBut those third party programs are exposing holes in the underlying OS protection. Besides, it also fails to note that most Mac "vulnerabilities" are due to the third-party BSD Unix system that Mac OS X is built on, many of which's utilities are rarely, if ever, used by most desktop users.
hey, look, I found an article too: Socialism IS better than capitalism: http://thisiscommunism.org/speech.htm
Odd...in real world experience, my article doesn’t seem to reflect reality...
How is this possible...Ive been hearing from Mac Freepers all these years that Apple is God’s machine (sarc/)
This is impossible because the Evil Empire is Headquartered in Redmond.
My god, don't you people know when you're being scammed???
Windows has become solid enough with Win7 that the so-called "security vendors" and anti-virus salesmen are desperate for revenue. Some (like Symantec) are diversifying into other services... some are saying, "Well, who else can we scare into buying our products??"
And the Mac is just the next one down the list after Windows.
Show me the Mac viruses.
Not the generic human-engineered malware that can affect any computer with a gullible operator. The Mac viruses, self-replicating, the ones that a human can't defend against with simple common sense.
Don't prevaricate. Show me the Mac viruses.
Otherwise, take these anti-virus products and shove 'em, until such time as there's something to protect against.
Please note that vulnerabilities DO NOT EQUAL exploits.
If you want on or off the Mac Ping List, Freepmail me.
But but but those of us who use Macs also have used PCs quite a bit and, well, we really don't see any room to debate as to which is less of a mal magnet.
I will grant that I have no experience with 7, which by the accounts I have seen is decent.
Wow!!!! I must have dodged a bullet and won the lotto with this apparent one of a kind iMac. This is my first Mac that I have had for over 2 years. Not once has it froze and not once has it been infected.
Here is the really big surprise... Not once, as in never, have I had ANY problems with this one of a kind Mac.
Now with all that information and my nearly 3 years of complete satisfaction, I finally know that I am the only guy in the world with a perfect computer.
When I bought this thing I paid quite a bundle, but that is pocket change for what I should be able to get for it now!!!
If anyone want’s to buy the only known perfect iMac, I now have it for sale, for the quick sale price of $20,000 cash. My price is firm as this is a collectors item, the last and only one of it’s kind.
This very Mac, that is more rare than planets with known life, can be yours.
All other Mac’s suck, make you a lib and turn you into a gay... mine is the only one that is safe.
I’ll wait for your calls at 1-800- MORE B/S. Hurry, call now.... this won’t last long.
Updated: Antivir Solution Pro Can Really Cause Trouble! http://www.pc1news.com/news/1516/updated-antivir-solution-pro.html
I got his nasty off a hip hop music site. First problem I’ve had for years. Malwarebytes got rid of it halfway but my computer was still blocked from the internet due to this malware. I then had to edit registry per instructions on internet.
Then was able to connect
You might have posted a link to the original study, instead of the laughable conclusion drawn by PC World.
Here, I’ll save you the effort:
http://secunia.com/gfx/pdf/Secunia_Half_Year_Report_2010.pdf
As you see by reading the report, no, Windows isn’t secure. Far from it.
The author at PC World, however, either can’t spot the Secunia error in methodology for creating that goofy little graph, or is depending upon the reader not spotting it.
If you’d use the CVE database, or the CERT database, you’d see just how silly the above nonsense is. This is an article written by an author who has a pecuniary interest in promoting Windows, published in a periodical that likewise favors Windows, from a company that sells Windows security products. Yet, reading into the guts of the cited report doesn’t paint such a nice picture for Windows, nor does it spend any time discussing the numbers displayed in the graph for Oracle or Apple.
As for “inherently secure:” No modern OS is “inherently secure.” If you want my recommendation on the “most secure OS available?” my response would be that OpenBSD is perhaps the most secure OS easily available.
The only OS that came close to being “inherently secure” was Multics on Honeywell hardware:
http://www.acsac.org/2002/papers/classic-multics.pdf
Sadly, Honeywell mainframes were always fighting an uphill fight against the S/370, and they eventually (Like all of the seven dwarves) were out of the computer business.
That said, in the last year, I’ve spent over 40 hours of my time helping people fix their Windows systems that were loaded up with malware - and EVERY single one of those systems was running an anti-virus/security package. Most of the security s/w was some version of McAffee - and the malware zipped right by it. Variants of Windows were Win2K, WinXP, Vista and 98.
I don’t run any anti-virus or security s/w on either of my Macs. Haven’t spent one minute on security issues in going on three years.
