Maybe, just maybe, five, six, seven miles down, there’s a giant bone buried down there, and dogs from all over the world were drawn like magnets to this very spot. It was like a canine gold rush. Sadly, after days, weeks and months of fruitless digging, each crazed pooch, thirsty and exhausted, expired without reaching his goal.

"Why Were Hundreds of Dogs Buried at Ashkelon?"Because they were dead?
To: SunkenCiv
Ancient Ashkelon, now quietly nestled beside the Mediterranean in the south of Israel, is shaped like a giant 150-acre bowl... Inside the bowl are buried at least 20 ancient cities, What's their definition of "city?" My company has three buildings and parking situated on 78 acres. 20 cities on 150 acres? That's a subdivision in an affluent American suburb.

Great site. Thanks for reminding me about it.

er...could it be because they died there?
Seems like a reasonable hypothesis for any archeologist.

All kidding aside, it is very worthwhile to visit the original web page and read the entire article which cover a lot more than dog burials and has some slide shows.
