Losing friends over Palin (Have you ever lost friends over politics ?)

Posted on 05/31/2010 9:46:47 PM PDT by se_ohio_young_conservative

I have lost THREE real life friends now in trying to defend Sarah Palin. On one hand I tend to think the people who call her stupid are not the kind of people I even want as friends anyhow. However, I wonder if im being too harsh and going too far.

I know our country was divided on President Bush. But the division and the hatred for Sarah Palin has been able to top anything. Before Palin, I had a much more positive outlook on people (especially women, mothers, ect) and life in general. Now I find myself seeing people through a totally different lens.

I understand why I am so outraged as a husband and father of two girls. But what is wrong with WOMEN in this country ? they have really let Sarah Palin and her family down by not standing up enough and drawing a line in the sand.

You said, ‘Be careful - it really does matter who’s in charge - ask anyone from some country where large portions of the population were rounded up and killed. And yeah, there’s lots of examples in the world. We could be next.’

= = =
Could?

I’d be more surprised if it didn’t happen than if it did.

Lost friends and family over Obama. I have no use for people who refused to acknowledge the information about him, and voted for him at the expense of America’s freedom.

You should never get in a fight over politicians. They are not worth it. Instead, you should get in fights over ideas, principles, and issues.

As I pointed out to another poster, if you discuss only the issues then you neglect half the debate. Connecting the politician to the issue is also important.

Look at it this way, SOYC, they weren't really your friends if they were unable to convince you to drop your Palin-worship schtick and do something fun in the real world.

There's a point where you simply agree to disagree with others and carry on. With or without them.

Yes! I have lost a few, too. I can’t sit idle while my women friends lay the double standards on Palin. In all honesty, they were my friends with the least self-esteem anyway. I don’t find any of the men I know hating on her like my female friends but that may just be my personal experience.

Obot women are either complacent about sexism or they active participants in the hatefest. It’s not healthy to be around.

I lost one friend on election day when she called to tell me she just had to vote Obama because she couldn’t stand the way Palin said, “You betcha.” Of course, Obama’s uhmmming and stammering didn’t bother her. Just Palin’s regional dialect.

Oh, and regional dialects only matter if you are running for VP not President.

...As I got older, I realized that the relationship between a president and the citizens is a professional one, not a personal one. The go into office and make life better, worse, or fail to have an effect at all. Then they go home to their friends, and the people that they care about, and chances are you won’t be one of them.

Great post, Melas! I excerpted the part I liked best.

Are you listening, kid?

True, but many of these pyschos will disappoint you when they do whats in their own selfish interest and sell out the country and leave you looking stupid for defending them previously.

I used to do that w Bush, but after Amnesty in 2005, Drug Bill, Harriet Meirs, etc etc I wisened up and no longer defend politicians blindly.

I will applaud them when they do good, and bash them when the screw up.

Hey Glock - power is all that matters to liberals. They haven’t had a new idea in 50 years. They would love us to “talk about ideas” while they prepare camps for us and our children to be shipped to... You, Glock, need to wake up and smell the coffee. Before it’s too late. Ask all the Jews who stayed in Germany thinking it would all be ok if they were just “above it all”...

I try to avoid discussing politics in social situations. If I sense that someone is a conservative, I may test the waters, so to speak, but not in groups. It can get ugly very fast.

My family is mostly liberal, even one sister who believes she is a conservative. My husband's family is extremely liberal.

I’m a Sarah Palin fan and have a few conservative friends who think she’s an idiot (dumber than a box of rocks one guy told me). I have other conservative friends and family that think she would be the absolute worst choice for the next GOP presidential candidate but can’t tell me who’s better (Romney comes up quite a bit). I consider these people to be misinformed or have bought into the MSM lies about Palin so I tell them I think they’re wrong and we continue to be friends.

Clear this up for me, you’re saying if a conservative hasn’t chosen which candidate to back 2 years before the election or before anyone has announced, then the obvious decision is to go for the box of rocks?

That sounds very much like a speech given by Justice Thomas. Are you familiar with it?

Yes I am familiar with it; it’s one of three quotes I use here often.

“Any African–American who votes Republican is a turncoat”.
~Je$$e Jackson

I counter that with the following two quotes.

”The smallest minority on earth is the individual. Those who deny individual rights cannot claim to be defenders of minorities.”
~Ayn Rand

”I refuse to have my views dictated to me as if I were an intellectual slave”.
~Justice Clarence Thomas

=========================================================== It is my individual right to vote Republican. And I do so even if so-called 'defenders of minorities' like Je$$e Jackson tell me I shouldn't.

Dunno. I enjoy having others around when I rant. It looks better than striding down the street alone while wildly gesticulating and shouting my views.

Hello my FRiend. I won’t go into detail of how family treats me because it sounds as though you’ve lived the same experience. I will just say that I have been verbally attacked by upwards of a dozen angry family members and, armed with facts, I won every debate. This resulted in some calling me traitor, house negro, Uncle Tom, etc. So be it. I can take a position and defend it. Those who supported B. Hussein Obama could not give one reason why they did other than the fact that he is black.

Currently, I have 2 family members who don’t speak to me and several who will but seem to have made it their life’s missions to talk trash about me. Again, so be it. I am right and I know it. Obama may be black but he is one of the worst things to happen to this country in my lifetime.

Why not just have people around that you can talk to in quiet respectful ways? Wouldn’t that be better?
