Steve Jobs Says iPad Revolution Means ‘Freedom from Porn’
LifeSiteNews.com ^ | Tuesday May 18, 2010 | Peter J. Smith

CUPERTINO, California, May 18, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computers, says his company will not be a party to the pornography industry and hopes that the iPad and iPhone revolution will help lead to a porn-free world.

Jobs reiterated his position in a heated e-mail exchange with Ryan Tate, a writer for Gawker.com, which follows news and gossip in Silicon Valley and elsewhere. Tate, who admitted that he was home alone and slightly inebriated at the time, took issue with a television ad calling the iPad a “revolution” and fired off an e-mail to Jobs.

“If Dylan [American songwriter Bob Dylan is one of Jobs’ favorite musicians] was 20 today, how would he feel about your company? Would he think the iPad had the faintest thing to do with ‘revolution?’ Revolutions are about freedom,” Tate wrote, not expecting a response from Jobs.

However, Jobs did respond to Tate, triggering an e-mail duel. “Yep, freedom from programs that steal your private data. Freedom from programs that trash your battery. Freedom from porn. Yep, freedom,” responded Jobs. “The times they are a changin’, and some traditional PC folks feel like their world is slipping away. It is.”

However, Tate accused Jobs of "imposing" his "morality" by having Apple forbid pornographic applications for iPad. “I don’t want ‘freedom from porn.’ Porn is just fine! And I think my wife would agree,” fired back Tate - who later said he regretted mentioning his wife.

Jobs shot back, “You might care more about porn when you have kids.”

I'm a computer engineer who very well might have designed the microprocessor many of your websites run on, or the camera in your cellphone, or the transceiver portion of your SATA drive systems, or who's software was used to design the bluetooth chip in your laptop, etc. etc.

I use Mac, Linux, Solaris, AIX, and rarely, Windows.

And I know exactly of what I speak of. I'm quite sure I've forgotten more than you'll ever know on this matter.

I think it was just a .wmv if I remember correctly...point is I sent that to all my PC users and she was the only one who couldn't open it on a Mac even though an employee of an Apple store...

Then your ex-wife is ignorant... or you are not telling the truth. Macs can easily play WMVs with the installation of Microsoft's own Flip4Mac. However, MS has refused to make its latest WMV11 available and has not released the codec for that format for any other platform... so It could be that Digital Rights Format file was what was not playable... but that is a special case...

I might add that you yourself sound a bit unsophisticated with your statements. There are so very few computer items that don’t play together today that I could probably place them on a single 5x10 card (and that would be a problem filling it up). Almost everything today is compatible with everything if you have just a little bit of knowledge.

I could care less if Apple or MS or anybody else guaranteed that they work on with a particular system. If you have been up to date, you would know that almost all manufacturers always make sure that their products work with the current market items.

To be more precise, I suggest that you are a fellow living in the past and still think that there are many items that are not compatible with today’s PC systems (or even Apple for that matter). You are the one that is out of touch...

Porn drives innovation. And, the best part, if you don’t want see it, you don’t have to. But its a big industry and free to those that choose to use it.

Heh... Sorry, you are speaking to the wrong person! I was at Datapoint when the 8008 was in-house and trying to be implemented by Intel (but too slow). That was followed by the 8080 that became a success. I worked with Datalink (early version of the current network protocol), Databus (early high level language) and their ACD (Automatic Call Distributor) - another high level contraption (like Apple - heh). You are a youngster and probably an impostor!

You sir, are an incompetent engineer (if you really are) and have little knowledge of what you talk about! The ignorance of today’s generation continues to amaze me!

You continue to talk about things that you know little or knowing about! Keep up your ignorant rambling and you will only continue to show yourself for what you are...

For goodness sakes, don’t come on to me about your background!

Apps are the way the iPad sees the world. Again, you use your favorite straw man argument. But that is not unexpected. BTW, thanks for showing everyone what a moron you are by misstating my position. Reading is fundamental — try it some day.

Wrong... obviously you have not used an iPad or an iPhone. They both use Safari Web Browsers to see the world... and Jobs was talking about dedicated Porn apps.

I find it very revealing about YOU, freedumb2003, that you are the only one on this thread that consistently uses ad hominem insults against your opponents. That's a sure sign of the loser in any debate.

Yes, actually most/most/(maybe) computer owners (it does increase with time) should know better than to buy their peripherals from Apple, but there are many that don’t - and that helps Apples top line...

Really, I do think that most of the Apple folks think that they have to but Apple Peripherals so they are compatible...

Most importantly, Android is business-friendly. You write an application and you use it, guaranteed. Not so with Apple - it will be examined by Apple, and Apple will decide if you are worthy of using it. It may be that your app that you need for your business is clunky, large and breaks Apple experience - you don't care, it's to monitor tire pressure in trucks, for example - but Apple does care, and the app will be axed unless your business pours more money and time into making it "right."

There are many potential uses of phones and tablets in businesses. Tablets, IMO, are best specifically for businesses and not for individuals at home. But Apple doesn't even have any process under which a business would be in control of its software. Android has that. So Android will be the winner on the business side. iPhone may or may not keep its lead on the consumer side, but I personally don't lose any sleep over it - I write only industrial software, and Android creates job opportunities where Apple is not even a player.

And you are wrong... many businesses have written specific business only apps that are intrinsic to a single business... and Apple allows this. You just don't know about it... so you claim it doesn't exist. Just because YOU don't know about it, doesn't mean it is not existent. There are reasons why many enterprise businesses are embracing the iPhone and now the iPad.

In terms of "being unstable", the last OS that allowed wayward apps to kill it was Windows 95. Fifteen years passed since then; why can't we expect Apple's OS to be in firm control of the applications, just like every other modern OS does? Apple's way is the DOS way.

The implication that Apple's OS is NOT in firm control of it's applications is BS and you know it... Don't try to rewrite history, Graysard! Windows 98, ME, XP and even XP were still unstable and wayward Apps could regularly kill the entire OS in those iterations of Windows. Vista was NEVER really ready for prime time. It wasn't until Service Pack2 of XP, in August of 2004, that Windows started to become stable enough to not regularly crash the OS. OS X has been far more stable since the release of OS X in 2001... and has been far more OS crash resistant than Windows. The last time I experienced an OS crash of OS X was in OS X.1... in 2002.

As it stands, Flash is banned regardless of how optimized it is. I'm sure if Adobe releases an app called "Flash" that does nothing and exits immediately it would be still banned, just on the basis of its name. On the other hand, if I put together a Tetris game that has twenty infinite loops in twenty threads (do they have threads?) and burns power like crazy, that would be just peachy with Apple.

Flash is banned because it will not work on touch screen technology which does not use a mouse pointer. Flash works by detecting MOUSE OVER and KEYBOARD inputs... something the touch screen iPhones and iPads singularly lack. Those attributes are built into FLASH at a very basic level and require rebuilding Flash from the bottom to the top. Adobe is doing that... but even if they do, how many of the hundreds of thousands of the existing Flash apps on the WWW are going to be rewritten to drop the Mouse Over and hovering requirements that pop-up menus or take actions? There will be a minority of new Flash apps that will work and a vast majority of legacy Flash apps that will not work with touch screen mobile devices... not a good solution... for years to come. There is a very good the reason that Flash is not allowed: IT DOESN'T WORK ON DEVICES WITHOUT MOUSE POINTERS!

Even the Vice President of Google admitted at a Google developer's conference the other day that it's Android OS phones were not producing the battery longevity they were promising because of Apps over drawing power... especially when multitasking... and that attempts to utilize the new Flash for mobile was one of the worst offenders.

Indeed, I'm not aware of any official way to bypass Apple store for deployment of my application on tens (or hundreds) of specific iPhones that the company owns. It is essential to be able to deploy directly because often there are urgent changes. Another reason is that you don't want any review of your app, by Apple or by anyone else outside of your company. Yet another reason is that you want to limit distribution of your software to only your devices, not to the whole planet. And finally this should be done automatically, from your office - not by asking hundreds of workers to do some complex procedure. I haven't heard or read anywhere about anything like that for iPhones (and this is standard in companies.)

Yep, you ARE the typical Apple customer. Not that it is a bad thing, but you are the one. How does it feel to continue to profess your purchase to others? I’m sure that you have to do that to other PC folks. It is NOT a bad thing, it is just something that happens...

Kind of kidding, but really, you do have to put up with some of that don’t you? There are lots of PC folks out there that wonder just why anyone would by an Apple - so the question is justified.

Heck, you may just be the ONE!

People buy Apple peripherals because of the same level of care and respect for quality and beauty that goes into everything they do.

People buy peripherals from whomever because it’s a package deal, it looks cheap on the front end, or they don’t know any better.

Really, do you think anyone who has braved the FUD emanating from the MS camp for twenty years does anything out of ignorance? The easy path is the well-worn path of least resistance, and that is where the sheep trod. That’s always been anything Microsoft and still is.

It’s funny, watching these threads. It sounds as if “apps,” a stripped down, modular conceptualization of software wholly attributable to Apple starting with iPhone and now being extended with iPad, has taken over the world, lol.

All these squealling, stuck pigs carrying on about Apple not wanting a dedicated porn app in their store? Bizarre. They don’t want direct association and by implication their imprimatur upon pornography. The porn-addled masses are as free as ever to go out and find it on their own, on Apple or some other inferior, Apple-knockoff platform.

It sounds as if somebody has found something, *anything* to use as a wedge issue to hamper Apple, no matter how silly or picayune. Adobe Flash? Adobe pulled out because *they* couldn’t make Flash compatible with touchscreen. It’s not compatible because it doesn’t work. It doesn’t work because Adobe can’t figure it out.

The webmaster or site administrator who decides to preclude a wide swath of potential hits out of fealty to a dated, buggy standard such as Flash is an idiot. There is an alternative, an alternative that Adobe itself supports, called HTML5.

Stir all the crap you want, it’s just more FUD, more anti-hype, trying to buy time for another wave of clunky copies to make it to market, for the sheep to get fooled into buying because it has a half-@ssed camera or some other battery life draining, unnecessary “feature” added purely for marketing purposes.

But, by all means, carry on. It’s fun to see just how wide of the mark you guys continue to be.

Ah come on... MAC is a propriety machine with higher prices for all peripherals and software. I’m not saying it is a bad machine, just overpriced and is pushed toward the young up and coming individuals. Their marketing plan works for them but they would never become the number one seller - and I doubt that they ever expected it. They are in the game for profits.

BS... Deagle, you do not have the faintest clue about what you are talking about. The modern Macs use standard peripherals that are sold throughout the PC industry. It uses the same printers, mouses, input devices, external HDs, cables, memory, etc. Mac Software is competitively priced with PC software. YOU are spouting ignorance.

You don't own a Mac, you don't buy Mac software. I do.

I make my living supporting professionals who use both PCs and Macs. I DO know what I am talking about. I also know that once I switch a client to Macs, I make LESS money from them because of problems with their computers.

As to Apple's target market. I will be 61 years old next week... I hardly meet the demographic you think the Mac is targeted toward... nor does my 94 year old mother who uses her Mac daily. Many of my friends are also Mac users... and many of my clients are switchers to Macs. They are also in my age group. Many of my non-business clients are also older users... and have come out of the Windows world and are glad they did. They are generally computer savvy users as well. They have made the choice to go Mac and will not go back to Windows.

My best friend, who is also one of my clients, is 71 and has twenty Macs in his business, plus six at his house, uses them to run his dental implant practice. He recently convinced several of his friends to switch from Windows PCs... and they couldn't be happier. His six children, whose ages run from 25 to 36, all have Macs as well... My two daughters, 31 and 34, both have Macs... and most of their friends who used to be Windows users who have now switched after being exposed to Macs through my daughters.

You may want a cheaper machine, but you may find you actually pay more in the long run for your PC. The fact is Macs have a LOWER TOTAL COST OF OWNERSHIP than Windows machines over the life of the computer. This has been demonstrated many times. Macs retain their resale value far better than do PCs.

The whole idea behind Apple stores is that you will only buy Apple devices... Now just why whould one of your Apple customers go out and buy a generic device and place it into an Apple system - won’t happen. They will only buy overly expensive Apple devices... my point...

Have you EVER been in an Apple Store??? You are spouting ignorance. You point has no validity.

“People buy Apple peripherals because of the same level of care and respect for quality and beauty that goes into everything they do.”

Yes, that is the element that they profess in the advertisements and it works.

“People buy peripherals from whomever because it’s a package deal, it looks cheap on the front end, or they don’t know any better.”

No, they buy Apple peripherals because it has the Apple logo on it...

“Really, do you think anyone who has braved the FUD emanating from the MS camp for twenty years does anything out of ignorance? The easy path is the well-worn path of least resistance, and that is where the sheep trod. That’s always been anything Microsoft and still is.”

Well, yes and no... They do brave the FUD (as you say) because of Apples advertisements. Yes, the easiest path is to follow Apple if you are so inclined and yes, that makes them Apple sheep...

“It’s funny, watching these threads. It sounds as if “apps,” a stripped down, modular conceptualization of software wholly attributable to Apple starting with iPhone and now being extended with iPad, has taken over the world, lol.”

Yes, it is... but most of those apps that are purchased seem to be Apple... strange isn’t it?

“All these squealling, stuck pigs carrying on about Apple not wanting a dedicated porn app in their store? Bizarre. They don’t want direct association and by implication their imprimatur upon pornography. The porn-addled masses are as free as ever to go out and find it on their own, on Apple or some other inferior, Apple-knockoff platform.”

Well, this is just bizarre... All porn is available regardless of operating system or seller...

“It sounds as if somebody has found something, *anything* to use as a wedge issue to hamper Apple, no matter how silly or picayune. Adobe Flash? Adobe pulled out because *they* couldn’t make Flash compatible with touchscreen. It’s not compatible because it doesn’t work. It doesn’t work because Adobe can’t figure it out.”

Nah, it is just that some of us have figured out the marketing strategy. That is not a problem, just a matter of savings...

“The webmaster or site administrator who decides to preclude a wide swath of potential hits out of fealty to a dated, buggy standard such as Flash is an idiot. There is an alternative, an alternative that Adobe itself supports, clled HTML5.”

Not totally sure what you are saying, but I think that I agree.

“Stir all the crap you want, it’s just more FUD, more anti-hype, trying to buy time for another wave of clunky copies to make it to market, for the sheep to get fooled into buying because it has a half-@ssed camera or some other battery life draining, unnecessary “feature” added purely for marketing purposes.”

Yep, it’s all hype and the sheep will buy...

“But, by all means, carry on. It’s fun to see just how wide of the mark you guys continue to be.”

Thanks for you consideration...

You sir are making my point! I am saying that Apple owners can upgrade or modify their systems with cheap PC alternatives but do they - hell no, they go to the Apple Store and pay exorbitant prices for the same thing!

That does NOT happen with PC owners because they are much mor aware of prices and alternatives.

Now actually, you sound like an ex-PC fellow that built your own computers and found out early on that even the standard PC peripherals would work with your Apple system. That’s okay, but please don’t confuse your ideas with those of the normal Apple buyers. They are usually non-computer types that stick to a brand name. That does mean that they spend several thousand dollars for a system that is not exactly up to date - but they feel good afterward...

Deagle, you are a FOOL if you think that.

You are a PC user who is trying to tell Mac users who KNOW what they buy and what is being sold for their computers... We are users who regularly go into Apple Stores and who DO NOT FIND Apple branded peripherals. You are making a fool of yourself. Please stop. You are just digging a deeper hole.

The fact is that most Mac users are MORE Computer literate than most PC users... they are people who generally familiar with BOTH Windows and Macs because they use Windows at work but have made a conscious CHOICE to use Macs at home. They have CHOSEN to buck the trend and gone their own way against the majority.

That means WE Mac users are akin to bi-lingual people who can speak two languages while YOU are the mono-linguist. Bi-lingual people have a broader global view.

YOU only know your PC. You know NOTHING about Macs, and you demonstrate it with every post you make on this thread.

WE, on the other hand know more about BOTH systems. WE have more experience and facts on which to base our more knowledgeable opinions. So you are the ignorant one, Deagle.

A good example is your statement that Mac users " . . .spend several thousand dollars for a system that is not exactly up to date - but they feel good afterward..." when a complete iMac system with a 21.5" Monitor, with software, can be had for a starting price from the Apple store for under $1200, and a MacMini, also complete with software, can be purchased to be used with your existing monitor and keyboard, for less than $600.

Yet YOU are trying to tell us we don't know what we are talking about????

That is truly laughable.
