With all the to do about the new law down in Arizona, it got me thinking about how often I have to show some form of identification in the course of my everyday life.
The big objection from the left is that you can be stopped and asked for "your papers"(nazi reference?). Well, let me list a few of the things I have to show "my papers" for:
Boarding an airplane (at least twice before you can board!)
Stopped for a traffic violation
To get my senior discount (ha)
To buy beer in a store (even though I'm 66 years old!)
To get my blood drawn (this is new)
Applying for a passport
Applying for a job (I don't do that anymore!)
I could go on, but I'm sure you folks can come up with a long list.
Have at it.
Aren’t those things all to a large degree voluntary?
Which ones? Not if you want to get on the plane. And BTW crossing the border illegally is a voluntary act, is it not?
Wanting to get on a plane is voluntary.
I would say an illegal border crossing is often but not always voluntary. Unless things are a lot different in Mexico, I would guess children have little to no say in the matter.
The problem is one side is starting from a bit of a false premise it seems. I just glanced over the bill but it seems you actually have to be doing something wrong before the police can approach you and ask if you are legal. I don’t think they can approach a group of Mexicans playing basketball in the park and demand they all show ID. However, that example seems to be the belief of those against it.
Library card. Used to be all I had to do was bring in a piece of mail. But, now, i.d.
I was going to add Doctor’s office, but you beat me to it. I just had to show my drivers license along with my insurance cards. I guess there are a lot of stolen cards out there...
You forgot writing a check, using a credit card, even going to the doctor (ID an medical card), when you buy medication........when I pick up my grandkids from preschool.
The nature of my job involves areas of the building secured by electronic locks and attended security desks. I have to present picture ID and electronic flash card every time I walk through one. It’s at least 20 times per day.
Need to show ID at Fenway park for a beer - they don’t serve illegals apparently.....nazis....
Yes. You do not have to fly I suppose. You can drive. You can walk. You can just stay in your house and become a recluse. But if you wander out into the world you are always subject to being asked for identification. It is a fact of life.
Oh, you must live in a red state. I live in a one of the bluest states, NY and have never been asked for ID in 40 years.
Here in Ohio you are required to show State ID and be finger printed to sell scrape metal at a scrap yard.
Picking up a parcel. Had to show two pieces, not just the one. DL was not enough.
To check into a (reputable) hotel.
To take a dump..........
To buy certain types of over-the-counter allergy medications (Claritin D, in my case).
I (sadly) used to live in a Red state (Florida). I do live in the Gainesville area, which is an unfortunate mecca for liberals (standard fare for a college town).
Go get a passport. That proves you are a citizen.
To vote.
To apply for concealed carry permit.
