Good evening.

This morning the beauty of the countryside as I drove to church was heart-stopping. It is a landscape that has become very dear to me thru the seasons: in the river's valley it's easy to fall quietly into another time, another age. And then I remembered nature's terrible destructiveness yesterday on other landscapes, places that others hold dear. How to explain it all?? I can't..not easily.

Then at church, there was much joy: the confirmands were accepted into the church's membership with celebration and love. All these young people had found focus and purpose on the past year's journey.

But our church family also absorbed some terrible news: a dear couple has learned that the husband has a deadly cancer.

And there again the juxtaposition of joy and deep sorrow. That was the theme of the day, and perhaps many days in our lives and that of our country.

Thinking about it off and on throughout the day, one thing does seem clear. And that is that with God's help, it is possible to face it all...a rich, precious existence, not always understood, but appreciated nonetheless.

Carolina!

Have you read The Guernsey literary and Potato Peel Pie Society?? If so, what did you think??

I do recommend it...a good read, imaginative set-up.

I haven’t read it....YET. The combination of the locale, the post WWII time, and interesting people is one that I know I would enjoy. W/799 5-star reviews of it at Amazon, it must be good.

I’ll get in touch w/you about what I think of it after I’ve read it though. Meanwhile, I’m gardening and jumping around in reading 4 books simultaneously. LOL

Good morning, Toby.

I log on here every once in a while to see what everyone is doing...including and especially you. LOL

Everyone seems to lead more varied and interesting lives that I do, so I live vicariously here in the country.

Big thrill for me yesterday was finding the first bloom on my bright RED peony!

I will move from near the front to close to the back and slip out during the rock concert, and be back for the main event.

You are very succinct. I agree with you. I've been doing that at conferences. If the churches I attend regularly start w/the rock concerts, I may slip out as you do. So far, the churches which have the best doctrinal preaching, coincidentally (!) don't have the rock music.

... be back for the main event....

Again, agreement here. 1Ti 4:13 says "Until I come, give attention to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation and teaching." IMO, no worship service is complete without the exposition of God's Word and that it is the pinnacle of the worship service.

Won't happen until November 2, 2010.

Seriously, prayers lifted.

Thank you for the prayers and you are right about November 2. In my limited speaking with others about Papua, almost 50% of the conversation is about Caligula. Then again, half of our personal supporters are either military, civilian contractors with the DOD or are with NASA.

Bush’s memoir will be coming out November 9th. $35, if anyone is thinking about Christmas.

I saw that. But $35 is too much for me.

I had to answer your question to Carolinamom!

I have never enjoyed a book that is all letters, or even many letters spaced through the book. However, I love “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society”.

I’m not quite through it yet, only a few more chapters to go, but it is highly entertaining. I especially love the questions and answers that go back and forth with great “small” stories in them.

Speaking of Caligula, I came upon this this morning when I was reading in Proverbs:

Proverbs 6 vs. 16-19

There are six things that the Lord hates,
even seven that are disgusting to him:
arrogant eyes,
a lying tongue,
hands that kill innocent people,
a mind devising wicked plans,
feet that are quick to do wrong,
a dishonest witness spitting out lies,
and a person who spreads conflict among relatives.

OH! I DO enjoy books of letter and diaries, too.

The Guernsey book was well done because it's a work of fiction, and the author created a good number of "voices"...

There were one or 2 minor annoyances for me, but not worth mentioning. I don't really read that much fiction, so this one stood out for me in that context.
